Directed by Jordan Ross and written by Ryan King, The Tutor hits theaters on Friday, March 24. The thriller follows a well-sought-after tutor named Ethan, who is asked to travel to New York and work with a billionaire’s son. With a baby on the way and a family to provide for, Ethan jumps at the high-paying opportunity. Screen Rant: What is the first word that comes to mind when you each think of this film?
Noah Schnapp: Absurd.
Victoria Justice: Suspense.
Garrett Hedlund: Let’s go with unpredictable.
Garrett, there are so many different layers to Ethan. I can’t even imagine how many times you had to adjust your headspace while filming this. Can you share a little bit about what was involved with playing this role?
Garrett Hedlund: Yeah, I guess [there was] quite a bit of expectation of being able to overcome the surprises in an obvious manner all throughout—not double underlining certain things for the “bom bom bom” moments or moments of intrigue or suspense. In regard to the headspace, I just wanted to make the character kind of relatable for anybody out there. [I wanted] to make his life and why he made certain choices relatable. I come across Noah’s character because I’m simply trying to provide for my family in a way that almost seems too good to be true.
Who wouldn’t take this opportunity? My life is sort of turned upside down from the moment I make that decision. I stick with it a little longer than most would because the man wants to provide and eventually Noah’s character starts to throw me for a loop and make me question my own sanity, or everybody else’s sanity around me to see if they’re seeing what sort of trauma I’m being put through by this young man.
Noah, I had a similar question for you. Your role definitely requires a lot of intensity, not just physically, but emotionally as well. What did you have to do to prepare?
Noah Schnapp: I think just reading through the script—music is something that really helps me a lot. Before a lot of the scenes, I would just put on some headphones and listen to mellowing music to mellow me out because I’m kind of an excited jumpy kid and this character is not like that at all. I think just watching Garrett’s process as well kind of taught me a lot. He came to our set many weeks before and worked on it with Jordan and worked out the caveats of everything. I think it just inspired me, like Victoria said before, to be a better actor and work on my craft.
Victoria, Annie is an innocent victim in this feud. We never question how genuine any of her actions are. As an actor, how were you approaching her situation, especially because it differs so much from the other characters?
Victoria Justice: Annie really has the purest of intentions throughout the whole thing. She has a genuine, deep love for Ethan and is excited to be a mother and start a family with him. It was fun being able to play this character and everything she’s going through and when her relationship is being put into question, and Jackson is bringing up this new information. Obviously, with her being pregnant, she’s at a really vulnerable place in her life and she’s extra emotional. So getting to play all of those things was really fun and interesting. I enjoyed my character’s arc. It was one of the things that really attracted me to the project.
