Google Pixel 7 review
Also in 2022 Google doubled with its top-of-the-range smartphones. In addition to the Pro version of Pixel 7 Pro, today we also try the “basic” version.
The slim packaging of this Pixel 7 betrays its meager content. In fact, we only find the USB-C / USB-C cable and the USB-C to USB-A adapter. Both the cover and the power supply are missing.
Construction and Ergonomics
Pixel 7 it is, as you can imagine, the more compact version of the Pro variant. We could probably not define it as a compact smartphone, but at least a “normal” smartphone in a landscape where the dimensions are decidedly generous. This Pixel 7 is an excellent compromise between the size of the smartphone and the size of the display. The device is still built in a fine way with the satin aluminum body and glass Gorilla Glass Victus. The band that includes the cameras is then precisely satin, as opposed to the glossy solution of the Pro model. We prefer this one.
We’re not sure if this design is a winner yet, but one thing is sure: we appreciate the uniqueness and recognizability of this Google smartphone family. In addition, this device is also resistant to water and dust according to the IP68 standard.
Google Pixel 7 has the same hardware as its big brother. Almost. We have the usual top-of-the-range processor Google Tensor G2 a 5 nanometer octa core from 2.85 GHz, while the RAM drops to 8 GB LPDDR5. The internal memory is available in 128 and 256 GB UFS 3.1 denominations, always not expandable. Excellent connectivity: 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC chip. Do not miss the exit USB-C 3.2while the 3.5 mm audio jack and the support for theultrawideband. The audio is stereo and of good quality, with an average volume for the category.
The performance of this processor is a true top of the range, but precisely with the Pro, here too we see a limitation in power after a few minutes of continuous use to prevent an excessive increase in temperature, which in any case transfers to the external body making it become thick warm.
Google Pixel 7 it’s a real camera phone. The main sensor is one 50 megapixel ƒ / 1.9 optically stabilizedwhile the secondary is a 12 megapixel ƒ / 2.2 wide-angle, although it does not have autofocus for macros.
The front camera is a 10.8 megapixel ƒ / 2.2. The absence of a zoom camera makes itself felt when it comes to “pushed” zoom, but up to 2 / 3x the cutout from the main sensor still does its job very well, managing to compensate for the absence of a dedicated sensor without any particular problem .
The photos are great, true top of the premium range. Excellent definition, excellent white balance and excellent light management. Even at night it behaves as we would expect, activating its “magical” night mode automatically and “pulling out” a lot of detail. Then there are all Google processing features, such as moving photos, portrait light, astrophotography (now faster) and the new feature that allows you to correct a blurry photo.
The videos are also at the top of the range in the Android world, even in 4K at 60fps. The images are extremely sharp and very stable. Also present is the cinematic mode that allows you to create videos with a background blur effect.
These are however still a kind of beta and the results can certainly be improved.
Pixel 7 has a 6.3-inch diagonal display in technology AMOLED and with support forHDR10 +. The resolution is FullHD + (1080 x 2400 pixels) and the refresh rate at 90 Hz is supported, although not all the various intermediate “steps”. The protective glass is always Gorilla Glass Victus and the Google always-on display is supported (obviously). The peak brightness is 1,400 nits. A good value, albeit not at the top of the category. The display is then flat, making all that slice of the public happy that poorly digest the curvatures of the display of many modern smartphones.
Pixel 7 is obviously embellished with the “pure” embodiment of Android like Google he thought so. Here we find all the latest functions of the company (in addition to those already mentioned of the camera), such as the translation of messages in real time (including videos and voice messages) and the now playing function that shows you the songs being listened to in the room where you are, with no need to activate any manual search or start any app.
Then we have the game optimizer and the ability to answer the phone call verbatim, reading the transcript of the call in real time. Everything is then very fluid and obviously based on the latest version of Android 13updated with the October 2022 patches.
The battery from 4,355 mAh it’s a good compromise between size, weight and portability. Obviously it will not be able to guarantee the autonomy of the Pixel 7 Pro, but it defends itself. However, this sentence hides a trap: Pixel 7 Pro was certainly not a monster of autonomy and this Pixel 7 therefore consequently can only do a little worse as a final result. On a day of heavy use it is not impossible that you have to charge it around dinner time to be able to use it again. It supports fast charging at 30W and above all that fast wireless 20W.
Google Pixel 7 comes sold for € 649. It is essentially one of the cheapest (really) top-of-the-range smartphones on the market.
It takes € 749 for the model with more internal memory. Check the Amazon boxes below for any price drops.
Google Pixel 7
Google Pixel 7 is the best top-of-the-range smartphone of 2022 for value for money. Basically he is the one to buy. A little thanks to Google (software, cameras, build quality) and a little because of the demerit of the competitors, who have raised their prices a lot recently. Pixel 7, on the other hand, still has an “affordable” price in the top of the range market and also has a “human” format.
