Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs has revealed his thoughts on returning to the franchise as Lucius Malfoy in a possible film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Written by Enola Holmes screenwriter Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part stage play that picks up 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rumors of a potential film adaptation of the play have been rampant since it first debuted in London’s West End in 2016.
Most recently, Isaacs spoke with RadioTimes.com about a potential return to the Wizarding World franchise and the possibility of Warner Bros. pushing forward with a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie. Admitting that not all projects written for the stage translate well to film, Isaacs seemed guarded about the possibility of such a project coming to fruition. However, he remained open to the idea of returning as Lucius Malfoy, saying “never say never.” Check out his comments below:
So we’ll see. It worked as a piece of theatre. Sometimes things that work as a piece of theatre don’t work as films. Sometimes things that work as books don’t work in theatre, so I wouldn’t… err… never say never.
Will A Cursed Child Movie Actually Happen?
Currently, there is no official confirmation that a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child film will happen. While Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had previously expressed his interest in further expanding the Harry Potter franchise, it is unclear what form those projects might take. While there have also been whispers of a potential Harry Potter television series, most theories have centered on an adaptation of the existing stage play as the most sensible way forward.
Should Warner Bros. eventually decide to proceed with a film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has been outspoken about his desire to tackle the project. Columbus, who helmed the first two films in the franchise, has revealed that the idea of reuniting with the original cast for a new film is actually “a small fantasy of mine.” Yet while Columbus may be keen for such a reunion, not all the original cast members are similarly on board.
Though Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton seems keen on returning to his role, the potential involvement of the franchise’s three lead actors, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, is less sure. While Grint has previously explained he would only return if everyone did, Radcliffe has made it clear he is not yet ready to return to the role of Harry Potter. Presently, it seems there are many barriers to getting a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child film together, but only time will tell if they can be overcome.
