The Colorado energy manager Guzman Energy has the project ready for a mega photovoltaic fieldto be placed on uncultivated agricultural fields, called Garnet Mesa Solar. The 154-hectare facility, costing $ 80 million, is capable of powering the homes of 18,000 familiesrisked not being approved by local authorities.
The reason was simply the protection of the soil dedicated to agriculture and livestock. The Delta County commission changed its mind when Guzman Energy proposed to transform the project into agrovoltaic. We had already talked about this practice in an old article of ours, and this is the perfect example.
Guzman agreed to add to the project the presence of 1,000 sheep, irrigation and vegetation, thus transforming the photovoltaic field into the perfect outdoor breeding site for these animals. The panels perform the multiple function of shading of the land and shelter for animalswhich in turn keep grass and weeds at very low levels, saving management costs and eating for free.
At the same time, irrigation is more effective and water lasts longer, which is very important in an arid area like Colorado. The choice was made to use sheep due to their limited tonnage, while cows or other cattle would have forced changes to the supporting structures of the panels.
The project is now under construction, and Guzman will spend approximately $ 1.5 million to clear the land, irrigate, and plant 590 trees and 1,440 shrubs. Once completed, the from field 80 MW of power overall will produce approx 194,000 MWh of electricity per year.
