Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves director Jonathan Goldstein’s latest set photo shows just how silly bringing the tabletop RPG to life can be. Ahead of filming, the two directors gathered Honor Among Thieves‘ core cast to play D&D themselves, giving each of them a taste of what the two hoped to bring to screen. Not only did the experience allow the cast to try the game, but it also acted as a chemistry test that helped them gather a better idea of their dynamics and characters, according to Daley.
While playing Dungeons & Dragons ahead of Honor Among Thieves gave the cast a way to immerse themselves in the world, production didn’t cut corners to bring the Forgotten Realms’ worlds to life. Alongside carefully planned-out single-take VFX action sequences, the creative team also sourced the lore of Dungeons & Dragons for the creatures who appear throughout the film. Despite this dedication to making the fantastical a reality, Goldstein and Daley did face some challenges that went too far for their budgets, with the Tortle and Grippli species not making it into the final film.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves charmed audiences upon its release, earning praise for its fun, fantastical adventure, lovable cast, and accessible take on the game’s fantasy world. As such, Goldstein’s continued glimpses behind the scenes is a welcome peek into just how the directing duo made amazing creatures come to life.
