On the heels of the House of the Dragon season 1 finale, Honest Trailers takes aim at the Game of Thrones prequel and gets quite a bit wrong. Originally based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel, Fire & Blood, the new HBO show immediately broke records with over 10 million viewers tuning in for the show’s premiere and subsequently wowed critics and audiences with its captivating performances and engrossing narrative. House of the Dragon was quickly renewed for season 2, however, Miguel Sapochnik will no longer serve as co-showrunner with Ryan Condal.
Set nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the prequel series focuses on the conflict at the heart of House Targaryen after King Viserys I Targaryen’s (Paddy Considine) decides to name his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), as heir to the Iron Throne. However, with a number of the king’s court viewing the choice as an insult to royal time-honored patriarchal tradition, Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) organizes a coup and anoints his grandson, Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), as king. With Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) killing Prince Lucerys Verlaryon (Elliot Grihault) in the season 1 finale, the Dance of the Dragons civil war is assured.
Screen Junkies‘ latest Honest Trailer pokes fun at HBO’s popular fantasy series, House of the Dragon, but gets quite a bit wrong with the prequel. Despite the video’s errors, the Honest Trailer playfully highlights the show’s tendency to have loud dragons sneak up on people, Alicent’s endless tears, and Larys Strong’s (Matthew Needham) love of feet. How HOTD’s Honest Trailer Gets The Show Wrong
Usually on point with its humorous critiques, the House of the Dragon Honest Trailer fumbled a few details regarding the prequel show. Other than narrator Jon Bailey mispronouncing Considine’s last name, the video claims that the only thing the rich Targaryen family has in common with the people of Westeros is inbreeding and incest. However, there has been no evidence in either show that the practice is common outside of royal families and high nobility. In Game of Thrones, Ser Jaime Lannister attempted to kill Bran Stark over his discovery of the knight’s incestuous relationship with his sister, Cersei, showing that such a practice in noble households is frowned upon.
The Honest Trailer also compares Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) to Game of Thrones‘ King Joffrey Baratheon. Although Daemon is spoiled and egotistical to an extent, he has yet to show a side of his character that is as twisted and cruel as the narcissistic Joffrey, a young king who showed his sadism by joyfully killing the prostitute Ros with a crossbow and cares for no one else but himself. On the other hand, Daemon has shown that he yearns for power but also genuinely carries love for his brother Viserys, bending the knee to get back into his good graces, and seemingly cared greatly for his wife Lady Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell) and their two daughters. Although Honest Trailers may have compared Daemon to the wrong Game of Thrones character, they were apt with their confusion over the internet’s odd fondness with him as they highlight his overtly negative characteristics. With House of the Dragon‘s return set for a 2024 premiere, audiences will have to wait a long time to see if Screen Junkies‘ Honest Trailer for season 2 is a bit more accurate.
