Goku and Frieza have been arch enemies for decades, but it seems the two Dragon Ball rivals unwittingly worked together to create a powerful attack.

While it may seem impossible to consider that Goku and Frieza would work together for any reason beyond a universe-saving multiversal tournament, the two of them actually (and accidentally) created Dragon Ball’s deadliest attack–one that was brought to life through an entirely different character: Cell.

Cell is a bio-android created by Dr. Gero who, throughout his artificial gestation period, was given a plethora of DNA samples from Dragon Ball’s strongest fighters. After Goku dismantled the Red Ribbon Army as a child, Dr. Gero (who was a former Red Ribbon Army scientist) created a tiny robot that he used to follow Goku around from that point forward. The robot collected DNA from Goku as well as nearly everyone Goku came into contact with, including Piccolo, Vegeta, and even Frieza. So, with the cells of Dragon Ball’s strongest running through his synthetic veins, Cell wielded some of the most powerful abilities upon his ‘birth’, and that was just the start of his evolution.

In Dragon Ball chapter 411 by Akira Toriyama, Cell has unlocked the transformation of Perfect Cell after absorbing Androids 17 and 18 some chapters prior. At this point, Cell is in the middle of hosting the infamous Cell Games–a contest that pits the world’s strongest fighters against Cell in one-on-one combat, and if Cell wins, he will destroy the world. In this chapter, Cell is facing off against Gohan who just reached the level of Super Saiyan 2. This newfound power made Gohan vastly stronger than Cell, so the villain tried to outmaneuver the young hero in an effort to claim his victory. Cell flew up into the air, charged his ki for a Kamehameha, and aimed it straight down at Gohan who was standing on the surface of the Earth. This attack was strong enough to destroy the planet, meaning Gohan had two choices: block the blast with his body and die or avoid it and doom the entire world.

Cell is Dragon Ball’s Perfect Amalgamation of Goku and Frieza

DBZ: Goku and Frieza created Cell.

In this Dragon Ball chapter, Cell essentially does exactly what Frieza would have done in that same situation. Cell used the potential destruction of an entire planet in an effort to secure victory over a single opponent. While Cell used the reasoning he assuredly adopted from Frieza, he used the raw strength he got from Goku to carry it out to its terrifying conclusion. Cell stole the Kamehameha directly from Goku, meaning it was Goku who unwittingly gave Cell the capability to destroy a whole planet with a single blast.

While Gohan proves to be stronger than Cell’s Kamehameha Wave, that doesn’t detract from the fact that, if Gohan wasn’t a Super Saiyan 2, Cell would have destroyed the Earth just to win this battle. By using aspects of both Frieza and Goku, Cell is granted Dragon Ball’s deadliest attack as Goku gave him the strength to decimate an entire world while Frieza gave him the will to do it.
