Consistently with several other research published in recent months, the Clusit report also confirmed that cyber attacks are constantly growing and that the most targeted sectors are the Public Administration and Healthcare. According to Clusit, the incidence of malware and vulnerability exploits is growing, while phishing attacks are on the decline. In any case, the solutions suggested by Clusit go from not postponing interventions that can improve safety, because the consequence is to incur higher costs in the future, in addition to the possible catastrophic consequences if the lack of interventions leads to not being able to counteract any attacks.

The importance of the Italian stage of atmosphere’22 was testified by the intervention of Madani AdjaliVice President Product Management of HPE Aruba, who in his speech, underlining how the world has changed profoundly and definitively after the two years of the pandemic, reiterated the importance of offering the market a advanced networking platform like that of HPE Aruba, which offers advanced hardware products and a software platform that allows you to manage the entire network infrastructure with great flexibility. On the product side, there is a great deal of attention to integrating new technologies, such as Wi-Fi 6E, but also offering great possibilities for integration with IoT products, hence the integration of technologies such as Zigbee in access points. Particular attention then to indoor localization, with the integration of a GPS antenna and the development of the Open Locate service, which guarantees a punctual and very precise localization of the connected devices. HPE Aruba’s goal is to make Open Locate a service accessible to the entire market, so that it becomes a standard for all manufacturers.
What’s behind the high-speed train Wi-Fi service

A very interesting moment of the event materialized in the meeting we had with Antonio Ghelardini of Trenitalia e Alessandro Ercoli, System Engineering Manager of HPE Aruba Italia. Ghelardini in Trenitalia deals with what is technically called “rolling stock”, ie everything that moves over the tracks and in particular the information systems on board. In the train information systems everything related to connectivity is included, both for what is necessary for the crew, but above all for the Wi-Fi service offered to passengers on high-speed trains. The essential premise made by Ghelardini is that a train that goes at 300 km / h is one of the most hostile environments ever to manage internet connectivity. The problem is not only the speed, but also the strong vibrations, the extreme temperature range, which for some components varies from -40 to +70 degrees, and the strong magnetic fields that are generated by the electric motors of the trains. Trenitalia has been working on on-board connectivity services for fifteen years, as users we feel like saying with ups and downs, but four years ago a journey began for significantly improve the level of service. The result of this change of pace is the fast Wi-Fi service now available on all 58 Frecciarossa 1000 trains, 16 Frecciargento ETR 700 trains and one third of the Frecciarossa 500 trains, with the aim of updating the remaining two thirds in the next 18 months.
The Wi-Fi Fast service is clearly influenced by a series of parameters that are difficult to “manage”, such as network saturation or the variability of cellular network coverage, but there is no doubt that a decisive step forward has been taken, which has allowed to significantly modify the browsing experience on board, so much so that today it is really possible to work or entertain satisfactorily while traveling. This is an important paradigm shift, because transfer time is no longer “wasted” time, but becomes “worked” time in effect.
HPE Aruba collaborates with Trenitalia for the fast Wi-Fi service
But how has this been achieved and what has changed compared to the past? Returning to the environmental difficulties associated with high-speed trains, Ghelardini has set an important concept: on board it is impossible to use standard equipment. Always using the technical jargon of the sector, all the equipment must be “railroadized”, so Trenitalia selects on the market the products it considers best from the start and then, in collaboration with the vendors, each single product is customized to adapt to work on the trains. Trenitalia therefore plays the role of system administrator and integrator to create a “harlequin” of products, in Ghelardini’s words, which adapts to the difficult conditions of use. A standard access point is opened, the power supply replaced with a railway one, the heat sink modified and finally it is positioned in the most suitable place, such as the cavity in the ceiling of the wagons which has a very limited height, to offer the best efficiency. possible.

Alessandro Ercoli confirmed that this optimization process was carried out in partnership with HPE Aruba which provided access points and switches and worked closely with Trenitalia to make the products suitable for use on high-speed trains. While connectivity on high-speed trains is a very small niche, it is a very challenging use scenario performance and reliability of products. The collaboration between the two companies was very close, involving both the technical department and the research and development department, also leading to the implementation of the specifications requested by Trenitalia in the new versions of HPE Aruba products. The fast Wi-Fi service is now used as an example by many railway companies around the world, as a model to follow to ensure an effective navigation experience.
This process of continuous optimization and evolution of the high-speed train network infrastructure has had another acceleration during the two years of the pandemic. When the restrictions made passengers disappear, Trenitalia took advantage of the situation to carry out more maintenance interventions, to be ready when the passenger traffic has restarted. Definitely a very different approach compared to what happened in the airport sector, which inexplicably found itself unprepared in the moment of recovery, with all the inconveniences we have witnessed.
