Internet for shopping, banking and social networks: Italy vs the rest of Europe

67 people aged 16 to 74 purchased goods and services over the internet in 2021. This is what emerges from the latest report by Eurostat in which it analyzes how much and how European citizens use the web. Even better did the inhabitants of the three Dutch regions Drenthe, Utrecht and Zeeland, where the percentage rises to 93%.

Italy, reports Istat, is increasingly connected, but despite this compared to the average an important gap still remains to be filled: just think that the first region of our country in the purchase of goods and services on the internet is the Lazio with 60% of the population, a value below the community average. Tail lights of e-commerce are Campania And Sicily with just 38%, while at European level the worst result comes from the Bulgarian regions of Severen Tsentralen (27%) and Yugoiztochen (26%).

Another interesting fact evaluated by Eurostat concerns thehome banking: well, in the three months preceding the investigation 58% of the community population has relied on this tool, a value that exceeds 90% in Denmark, Finland and some regions of Holland. The record belongs to Helsinki-Uusimaa (Finland), Innlandet and Trøndelag (both Norway) with 96%.

Italy is in the lower-middle part of the ranking: the Autonomous Province of Trento it holds the national record with 57% of the population who used the home banking tool in the period under consideration. Campania and Calabria are last with 27%, while overall those with the lowest percentage – and therefore with the lowest rate of use – are Bulgaria (Yuzhen Tsentralen and Severozapaden) and Romania (South-East), all at 7% .

The 57% of the European population used social networks in 2021 (data collected in the three months prior to the survey). The data is separated to analyze the utilization rate between young and old: it then rises to 83% for those aged between 16 and 29 and falls to 23% for those aged between 65 and 74.

In our country the record goes to Tuscany (55%), followed by Lazio and Umbria, both at 54%. Calabria and Sicily are last with 45%. At the European level, the first place goes to Iceland (93%), the last to Thüringen, Germany (34%).
