A very complex year is coming to an end for the Italian car market. The last month of 2022 ends, however, with a growth of 21%. According to data released by UNRAE, in the month just ended there were 104,915 new registrations registered against 86,717 units in December 2021. However, despite the constant growth of recent months, the Italian car market ends the whole of 2022 with a drop of 9.7%. We are talking about 1,316,702 registered cars, over 141,000 cars less than in 2021. The year ends not too far away, underlines UNRAE, from the all-time low recorded way back in 2013 (1,304,500 units registered).

Commenting on the data for the year, the president of UNRAE, Michael Criscireiterates the priority interventions for the automotive sector.

We ask the Government for a clear indication for the acceptance of new technologies and, in the meantime, the maintenance and strengthening of purchase incentives for the renewal of the vehicle fleet at least until 2026 for individuals and companies, providing for the elimination or at least the raising the price thresholds. Equally urgent are the development of an infrastructural policy for electric recharging and hydrogen refueling, and the structural revision of the sector’s taxation, modulating VAT deductibility and cost deductibility based on CO2 emissions for company cars.

Returning to the data for the last month of 2022, on the user side, private individuals obtain a market share of 52.8%. Self-registrations, on the other hand, closed at 8.9%. Long-term rental is doing well, obtaining a market share of 28.7% in December 2022. Instead, short-term rental can only count on a 2.5% market share in December. The companies get a market share of 7%.

Coming to the feeds, petrol and diesel they obtained, respectively, 25.5% and 20.5% of the December market. As usual, hybrids (HEVs) did very well, closing the last month of 2022 with a 34.6% share (10.3% for full hybrids and 24.3% for mild hybids). LPG ends the last month of the year with 9.5% of the preferences. Natural gas stops at 0.5% of the market.

In the month just ended, the electric ones closed at 4.3%, in flexion compared to the same period of 2021 (7%). With regard to the Plug-ins, in the last month of 2022 they obtain a share of 5.1% (6.4% in 2021). Coming to Automotive groups, Stellantis marks a growth of 3.49%. The Volkswagen Group did very well, with a +30.74%. The Renault Group is also growing, closing December 2022 with a growth of 8.69%.

Also noteworthy are the +32.52% of the Toyota Group, the +29.72% of Ford, the +16.73% of the BMW Group and the +47.51% of the Daimler Group. Increase of 79.25% for Kia and 33.53% for Hyundai.
