The Joker has done many terrifying things over the years, but one of the most horrifying things he ever did was transform another Batman villain into a monster. Clayface has always been a rather scary villain, after all, he’s a giant monster made of shape-shifting mud, but he became a lot more terrifying thanks to Joker.
The Joker has been terrorizing Gotham for years, for many citizens of Gotham City, the Joker seems like an actual boogeyman haunting the streets. He kills people through laughter, infecting them with toxins that can spread through almost any medium, be it air, liquid, gas, or even touch. Not to mention the all-time proven idea that clowns are inherently scary. Clayface on the other hand is terrifying in a much different way. He’s a living golem made of clay, he can drown people with a touch or even steal their entire identity by reshaping himself, so when Joker infected part of Clayface with his Joker toxin, the result was a terrifying villain.
Almost all of Batman’s enemies have some horror elements, but the most horrifying enemy Batman has ever faced was Clownface, the Joker toxin-infected version of Clayface who debuted in Arkham Manor #3 by Gerry Dugan and Shawn Crystal. While Joker was disguised as an Arkham intern, he found a piece of Clayface, not enough to be entirely aware or capable of speech, but enough to shape-shift and take action on things, so as he naturally would, Joker infected it with his toxin. This caused Clownface to become a complete monster since Clownface didn’t have the capacity to reason or communicate, it became a monster based entirely on anarchy. The only thing Clownface wanted was to cause death and destruction, much like Joker.
The idea of Clayface with the morality and sadism of Joker is easily one of the most horrifying villains Batman could ever face, with its shape-shifting abilities it would be akin to Spider-Man’s villain Carnage. Eventually, Clownface was defeated by the combined forces of Batman and most surprisingly, Mr. Freeze, once they managed to subdue Clownface he was stored in the freezer, until he eventually broke out once again and began a fight with the real Clayface, whether Clayface was able to reabsorb Clownface or not isn’t known, but given how Joker Toxin works, it’s likely better if Clayface didn’t reabsorb Clownface, lest he is infected as well. After all, readers have seen just how dangerous a Joker Toxin-infected person can be.
Many of Batman’s villains are horror focused or have horrifying elements, from Scarecrow, and Two-Face, to Joker himself. Batman is no stranger to horrifying villains, but a Joker Toxin-infected Clayface is likely one of the most horrifying villains that Batman ever faced.
