I consider former President Donald Trump a danger to American democracy, but the more proximate danger is a federal law-enforcement edifice run amok (“America’s dark age of guilty until proven innocent,” Web, Aug 11).

When laws are applied unevenly then the law ceases to be objective and becomes what the authority at hand chooses to call it. We see this at the local level with certain district attorneys putting local laws in abeyance, and at the federal level when Democrats Hillary Clinton and Sandy Berger are treated differently from Republican Trump for much of the same transgressions.

The brazen FBI raid at the Trump home in Florida without the courtesy of first notifying the former president is an outrage. Discussion and negotiation, which was the protocol followed in the Clinton and Berger cases, is far preferable to a secret raid on a private home.
