Taika Waititi returns to direct another outing for Chris Hemsworth’s god of thunder, and we are going to see a different Thor in this movie.

With all attention on Doctor Strange’s new adventure, Taika Waititi wants to remind us that there is another big Marvel movie arriving this summer in the form of Thor: Love and Thunder. As part of a summer movie preview, the director told the Associated Press that the new movie is going to find its title character in a much different place to where he has been in the past, as the God of Thunder finds himself without a real place in the world, and according to Waititi, is having something of a mid-life crisis.

There is not too much known about the latest Thor movie, other than it will see the creation of The Mighty Thor when Jane Foster wields Moljnir, the return of fan favorites like Korg, Valkyrie, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, and a plethora of Gods along with Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher. However, when it comes to the actual plot, well that is a little bit thin on the ground right now, but the first trailer seemed to suggest that Thor isn’t really wanting to be the god of anything anymore. During the interview, Waititi said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie and The Mighty Thor. And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale. Thor is just trying to figure out his purpose, trying to figure out exactly who he is and why he’s a hero or whether he should be a hero. I guess you could call it a midlife crisis.”

While Doctor Strange is currently delivering a dark, Sam Raimi special, Taika Waititi will be bringing a bright, bold and off-the-wall movie to life in July. In previous interviews, Waititi has made it clear that he believes Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the most bizarre movies he has ever made, so much so that he even joked that it could be a career-ender. He explained:

“Well, just between [me and] you and the readers, I’ve done some crazy sh*t in my life. I’ve lived, like, ten lifetimes. But it’s the craziest film I’ve ever done. If you wrote down all the elements of this film, it shouldn’t make sense. It’s almost like it shouldn’t be made. If you walked into a room and said, ‘I want this and this and this.’ Who’s in it? These people. What are you going to call it? Love And Thunder. I mean, you’d never work again. Maybe I won’t after this.”

Thor: Love and Thunder certainly seems to be continuing directly from Thor: Ragnarok as far as the feel of the movie is concerned. When taking into account it was a big turnaround for the Thor franchise after the disappointing Thor: The Dark World, it is not surprising that Waititi doesn’t want to make too many changes to the formula. How this movie manages to capitalize on the continued interest in the MCU is something that we will find out in two months when the film arrives in theaters worldwide.
