Why now, and why back to Marvel?
It was the right opportunity at the right time. Marvel was interested, and DC for some reason didn’t try to hold me back.
What do you bring with you from your experience with DC Comics?
The business is always the same: there are no big differences. At first it’s true, I was worried. But in the end it’s always about drawing superheroes, and I enjoyed it. What changes are the writers. Each company gives the opportunity to work with different writers. If you were to point out which ones I had the most fun collaborating with, I would definitely say Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman and Mark Millar. I am privileged to have worked with all three, and I would love to do it again.
Comics can often have a toxic fan base; that we talk about politics, ethnic themes, female protagonists. What is your experience?
I have been lucky, I have never experienced any negativity about my works, mainly because I am essentially apolitical. Of course, I come from New York, a multi-ethnic city in a multi-ethnic part of America, and this is a theme that we have always included in comics and which is important to talk about. But politics in the US, that’s really toxic, and I prefer to keep out of it. Often in the industry many have approached me with questions about politics, trying to mind my own business, but I don’t want to talk about it, I keep myself independent.
What has been the impact on comics from other media such as cinema and video games?
Movies and CGI have challenged the way comics are drawn. Artists must constantly improve to stay in line with the visual solutions made possible, or credible, thanks to digital means.
At the extreme of this trend are artificial intelligences (such as Dall-E 2) which did not exist until a couple of years ago, and today threaten to supplant artists creating drawings and paintings that reproduce different styles, including that of comics. A trend that seems very fast. It worries you?
Yes, I’ve heard of it. I know that even in the cinema you could make a movie with a superstar actor without even needing to have that actor in the cast. The idea scares me, I really hope my work is not at risk. But I am convinced that true art will always be related to people, and that it will never be entirely artificial.
