Just how dangerous it can be was on full display in Doctor Strange when it was used to put Dormammu in a time loop. Its capabilities were demonstrated again in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos’ acquisition of the Time Stone allowed him to easily undo Vision’s death and complete the Infinity Gauntlet. But while there’s little doubt of its potential in the MCU, there’s long been questions regarding the inner-workings of the Stone and exactly what it does. One theory, which draws from Ant-Man’s experiences in Avengers: Endgame, provides a possible explanation for the Time Stone’s powers.
The Time Stone’s Nature Is Something Of An MCU Mystery
The complexities of the Time Stone have never been fully outlined in regards to the MCU’s time travel rules. It’s understood from the movies that a person can’t change events in their own timeline, even if they go back in time. By using time travel, they would simply be creating a new timeline, hence why the Avengers didn’t return to the battle of Wakanda and stop Thanos from assembling the Infinity Gauntlet. However, Thanos was indeed able to change the past in Avengers: Endgame when he reversed the moment when Scarlet Witch killed Vision. Somehow, the Time Stone can change the past without the creation of a new, branching timeline.
MCU Theory Links The Time Stone To Ant-Man’s Endgame Experiences
One theory attempts to clear up the Time Stone mystery by linking back to a scene in Avengers: Endgame. While still trying to decide how to make their time travel plan work, Smart Hulk used his device on Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang with the intention of sending him a few minutes back in time. But instead if it working out that way, Scott was aged backwards into a child. He was turned into an elderly man and a baby before Smart Hulk could finally return him to his proper age. As for what went wrong, Iron Man summed it up perfectly. As Tony said to Steve in the movie, “instead of pushing Lang through time, you wound up pushing time through Lang.”
This phenomenon, or at least one oddly similar to it, has been seen elsewhere in the MCU. When trying to wrap his mind around how he could use the Time Stone to his advantage in Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch’s character unleashed its power on an apple that had a bite taken out of it. After being subjected to the energy of the Time Stone, Strange succeeded in restoring the apple and also rendering it old and rotten. Curiously, Tony Stark’s description of what happened to Ant-Man applies directly to the apple. The apple wasn’t sent forward or backward in time; its appearance changed because the Time Stone “pushed time” through it.
That accounts for why the Time Stone hasn’t made branching timelines and why Thanos was able to undo Vision’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Like what Smart Hulk’s machine did to Ant-Man, Thanos moved time through Vision, bringing him (and the others in his vicinity) back to the moment before the Mind Stone was removed from his head. Judging by this connection, it’s possible that the Time Stone’s true power is that it speeds up and reverses a person’s lifetime.
Wong’s Warning Means There May Still Be More To The Time Stone
If that theory is true, that would mean that no one has actually used the Time Stone to travel in timeyet. But even if it does “push” time through people and objects, that wouldn’t necessarily mean that this is the extent of its powers. In response to Strange’s decision to tamper with the Time Stone, Wong and Baron Mordo gave him warnings about what could happen if he misused it. According to them, using the Time Stone can lead to all sorts of consequences, including “branches in time,” “unstable dimensional openings,” “spacial paradoxes“, and “time loops.”
Some (but not all) of these abilities have since been demonstrated in the MCU. Dimensional openings created by the Time Stone, for instance, were never explored. The number of potential disasters the Time Stone can apparently cause are indicative of just how complicated the Time Stone’s powers really are. Due to its destruction in Avengers: Endgame, there’s so much about the Stone that may never be explained.
