Half announces an imminent price increase of the Quest viewer 2: $ 100 more from August 1st. The 128GB and 256GB versions will then go up from the current $ 299.99 and $ 399.99 a 399.99 and 499.99 dollars. For the moment, confirmations on the exact extent of the price change have been provided only in relation to the US market, but the Company has nevertheless anticipated that there will be variations in all markets in which the Quest 2 is marketed.

More explicit news is therefore expected for Europe. Currently the viewer is on sale in Italy at 349 euros (128GB version) and 449 euros (256GB version); in the hypothesis – to be confirmed – of a 1: 1 increase compared to that in dollars, the new starting price could therefore be equal to 449 euros.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is exactly the same viewer presented just under two years ago. The only difference – better to say meager consolation – is that Meta now includes the popular Beat Saber game in the purchase for a limited time. The official reason for the increase is linked to the increase in costs:

the costs of making and shipping our products have increased. By adjusting the price of Quest 2, we can continue to grow our investment in research and development of new products that lead the virtual reality industry to break new ground.

The official note generically mentions an ambitious roadmap of virtual reality devices and in particular the Project Cambria viewer expected by the end of the year. In the immediate future, however, Meta calls potential buyers of the Quest 2 to make a further outlay to have the same product in circulation for almost two years.

Quest 2 has achieved significant feedback in terms of sales: 15 million since launch, which allow it to dominate the ranking of the best-selling VR headsets ever. The news of the price increase comes in a period that was all in all favorable for the further spread of the viewer, considering the recent disappearance of one of the annoying limits that had characterized it, namely the need to have a Facebook account to use it. One of the elements that contributed to the success of the Quest. 2 was precisely the low price, which now becomes less so.
