After making contact with the first custom video card based on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 project, in this article we deal with another solution that takes the name of GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio. As many will have understood, it is a proposal for MSI. The Gaming X Trio can be seen as the Founders Edition of the Taiwanese company together with the Gaming Trio, because the basic offer in a range also composed of the SUPRIM and SUPRIM LIQUID models.

The X synonymous with higher clocks, with the proposal coming to the editorial office that factory overclocked even by default, while the Gaming Trio operates on the same frequencies as NVIDIA’s Founders. Only by installing on the MSI Center system you “unlock” a very slight clock increase of 15 MHz on the boost frequency.

The MSI RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio has dimensions of 337 x 140 x 77 mm and a weight of almost 2.2 kilograms. These numbers paint a card with a length and width between the ASUS ROG Strix and the Founders, while the thickness is greater than both. The weight very similar to that of the Founders Edition. In the bundle MSI has included a bracket to support the card.

Speaking of clocks, MSI’s Gaming X Trio it operates at 2595 MHz in Gaming and Silent modebut by installing MSI Center you can activate the profile Extreme Performance at 2610 MHz. As we have already seen when trying the ASUS ROG solution, these are clocks that do not make the difference in terms of performance compared to the Founders Edition and also the tests you will see later confirm this.

The card shows up with a Tri Frozr 3 heatsink with TorX 5.0 fans designed to ensure high pressure and constant air flow to the radiator. In each fan, three blades are joined by a blade and are inclined by 22 degrees to maintain optimal airflow even at low rotation speeds. The fans are equipped with 0dB technology which makes them stay still under a certain temperature, thus ensuring a silent system in idle.
The heat of the GPU and memory modules is captured by a nickel-plated copper plate and quickly transferred to a series of heatpipes, with a square section that completely touches the vapor chamber. The heatpipes pass through a large radiator. Complete the whole a metallic backplateequipped with some slits for the passage of air towards the top of the case.

The power supply of the board provides 18 phases dedicated to the GPU and 4 phases dedicated to memory. The Gaming X Trio equipped with dual BIOS to switch from Gaming to Silent firmware: frequencies do not change, only the fan profile changes and consequently the GPU temperature. In our tests we have noticed that the Gaming profile is already sufficient to ensure a not excessively noisy operation.

The board equipped with three DisplayPort 1.4a and one HDMI 2.1, while if you remember well the ASUS ROG had an HDMI 2.1 more. Unlike the Founders Edition and the ROG Strix, this solution accompanied by a 16-pin adapter to 3 8-pin connectors: there is therefore no fourth connectoroptional and intended only for extreme overclocking, as on the other solutions passed in the editorial office.

Test setup
We tested on a new motherboard-based platform ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero, 32 GB G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5-6000 (30-38-38-38-96) memory and an AMD processor Ryzen 9 7950X with 16 cores and 32 threads. All the cards you will see in the graphs have been tested with Resizable BAR active. For the previous generation NVIDIA GPUs we used the 516.94 drivers, for the RTX 4090 the drivers provided by NVIDIA to print numbered as 521.90.

As for the AMD Radeon GPUs, we used Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 22.9.2 drivers. All NVIDIA GPUs are Founders Edition models, except the proposed ASUS of course; in the case of AMD, the Radeon RX 6950 XT card is a GAMING OC from Gigabyte while the other models are reference cards.
MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio performance
The purpose of the article is to evaluate the value of the MSI video card compared to what we saw with the Founders Edition of NVIDIA and the ASUS ROG proposal, so we only performed a part of the tests performed in our main review, to which we refer you if v ‘you are interested in the RTX 4090 in different use scenarios or would like to deepen some of the innovations such as the DLSS 3. In this case we simply propose the comparison with the gaming suite without ray tracing or active upscaling technologies.

The performance of the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio are completely similar to the Founders Edition and the ASUS ROG solutionon the other hand, the frequencies are very similar and, thanks to the voluminous cooling system of all three proposals, all the cards operate at very similar frequencies during gaming thanks to the GPU Boost algorithm.
Overclock
We managed to get MSI’s video card to clock rates virtually identical to those achieved with ASUS ‘ROG Strix, with the GPU at 2795 MHz (versus ASUS’s 2800 MHz) for GPU Boost, while the memory touched 23 Gbps. These are values valid only for our sample and not necessarily that they can be replicated on identical models or models from other companies. We did some tests both to test the stability of the frequencies and to see the performance impact:

Once again we have to say that, despite the higher manual OC endured by the Gaming X Trio compared to the Founders Edition, the return in terms of limited or no fps. Only The Riftbreaker seems to reward the custom card more than the rest of the tests, but when you factor in the fps, that’s a 2% difference compared to the overclocked FE.
Frequencies, consumption, temperatures and noise
The most interesting aspect of a test on a custom video card is undoubtedly the analysis of the behavior under load to understand if the cooling system does its duty and if it is up to the Founders Edition or that of other proposals of the partners. AIB. Let’s start with the GPU clock:

The OC narrow by default compared to the Founders Edition does nothing but confirm that at those frequencies the AD102 GPU of the RTX 4090 operates around 2750 MHz with a well-thought-out cooling system.

Above you can see the graph of the GPU frequency trend with the MSI Gaming X Trio overclocked manually: behavior completely similar to that of the ASUS proposal, on the other hand the new two samples have touched practically identical stable frequencies.

In terms of temperature, the GPU on the MSI is on a similar level to that of the Founders. The huge heatsinks of these video cards allow the AD102 GPU to maintain temperatures absolutely within its guard limits. To be recorded as the solution of ASUS, superior to this Gaming X Trio, manages to keep the chip a few degrees cooler. Let’s move on to consumption:

There is not much to say here, the cards have similar clocks and consequently the consumptions are similar. Of course, it is always about 450W on average, with peaks of 470W below a second, so what was true for the Founders Edition remains true for the custom: equip yourself, if you don’t already have it, with a high efficiency power supply of about 850W. As far as noise is concerned, the Gaming profile can already be defined as optimal with a noise level of around 45.7 dB when playing games, compared to an ambient noise of around 36.5 dB.

Conclusions
MSI’s Gaming X Trio in RTX 4090 sauce is undoubtedly a well-made video card, which allows NVIDIA’s new project to ground all the horses it owns. At the moment the limited availability of the RTX 4090 cards maintains the high prices, well over 2000 euros. In this case, while the Gaming Trio sold for 2199 euros, the X Trio under review starts at 2300 euros. The consequential price to the list of 1979 euro base established by NVIDIA.

Although the RTX 4090 represents a decidedly big step forward compared to the previous generation proposals, even the GeFore RTX 3090 Ti, its undoubtedly high price. Reviewing the Founders we talked about a price at the limit of the “bearable”, practically scientific, so we can only judge the 2300 euros of this proposal excessive and high. Not to mention that, at the time of writing, the GPU is practically unobtainable.
That said, we reiterate that MSI’s custom model is undoubtedly adequate for the canons of a high-end product, like other Gaming X Trio of the past. However, remember that the RTX 4090 is not a card for everyone, cost apart, because it requires a power supply with high power and the insertion in large and well-ventilated houses.
