In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Nightwing, Dick Grayson and Batgirl intentionally reject one of the biggest romance clichés for superheroes.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Nightwing #96

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Nightwing, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl take a major step in their relationship while refusing to entertain one of the biggest superhero romance clichés. Serving as the final chapter of the Battle of Blüdhaven’s Heart, Batgirl and Nightwing get a chance to be alone in the aftermath to consider what the future holds. Thankfully, the two vigilantes end up making the right choice rather than falling into the typical trap so many other superheroes have fallen into.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In previous issues of Nightwing from writer Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, Dick Grayson has been taking major steps to improve his city of Blüdhaven now that he’s recently become a billionaire. Naturally, that’s put a major target on his back regardless of whether he has his mask on as Nightwing or not. After all, the city’s criminals such as Blockbuster would prefer that the city remains in its corruption and darkness as it has been for years. That being said, Barbara Gordon has been Nightwing’s biggest ally both as Oracle and Batgirl all while the two have been reigniting their romance in the DC Universe.

Now, the new Nightwing #96 sees Dick Grayson taking down Blockbuster and his entire criminal empire in one night, having received help from Barbara and a legion of friends and allies who came to his aid the moment Nightwing asked for their help. While Blockbuster was defeated, he did escape with the knowledge that Dick and Nightwing were one and the same, a development that has devastated Dick seeing as how Barbara is now in danger as well. While Grayson initially concludes that that means the two of them can’t be together, Barbara has the perfect response in this issue:

Just like heroes like Marvel’s Spider-Man have believed from time to time that they can never have a relationship because it would put their significant other in danger, Nightwing seems to think that he won’t be able to keep Batgirl safe now that Blockbuster knows his biggest secret. However, Barbara refuses to let either of them go down that very overdone path, choosing instead to let herself be happy and encouraging Dick to do the same.

As a result, it looks as though Nightwing and Batgirl are going to be together for the long-term, a decisive victory for shippers of the two heroes. By rejecting one of the most common romance clichés for superheroes, Dick and Barbara will be able to start a relationship while they protect each other, taking the risk for the sake of their shared love and ultimate happiness in the DC Universe. As such, one can only hope that wedding bells will be in the cards for the near future.
