NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 graphics card is yet to see the light of day, and a new report now claims that it will likely remain that way for some time. NVIDIA announced its RTX 40-series GPUs late last month as an upgrade over the RTX 30 lineup. Currently, only two cards in the new series have been announced, including the top-of-the-line RTX 4090 and the more mainstream RTX 4080. However, the company initially announced two versions of the RTX 4080 with 16GB and 12GB of RAM before withdrawing plans to release the latter following massive criticism over its performance, positioning and pricing.

Alongside the RTX 4080 12GB, NVIDIA is also said to have scrapped the Ada Lovelace-based TITAN graphics card, with a recent report claiming that the company is working on the RTX 4090 Ti instead. The TITAN card, which was expected to offer top-end performance for creators and professionals, was also expected to ship with more cores and faster memory than the standard RTX 4090. However, the beefy performance was expected to come at a price, as the card was said to have a power draw of over 600W, which would have made it a niche product by most standards.

According to the latest video from the popular YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), the RTX 4070 could offer stellar performance, but it might not be here for a while. The video, which discusses several aspects of the yet-announced graphics card, claims it could be launched towards the end of Q1, 2023. However, according to one of the sources quoted by the channel, the card is unlikely to launch any earlier, as NVIDIA still has plenty of Ampere GPUs in its inventory and is unwilling to launch new products without clearing out the old ones first. The company reportedly expects the inventory problem to be solved by the end of Q1, which is why it is being touted as the probable launch date for the 4070.

RTX 4070 Not Coming Any Time Soon

MLID further claims that NVIDIA could still announce the RTX 4070 sooner than Q1 2023, maybe even before the end of this year. However, Q1 is the earliest that the RTX 4070 is expected to hit the market, meaning there could be even further delay in the launch of the new GPU. The video also suggests that the RTX 4070 won’t just be a rebranded RTX 4080 12GB, as has been suggested by other reports over the past few days. As for the exact specs, the video claims that even NVIDIA doesn’t yet know how to position the upcoming card, and a lot will depend on the performance of AMD’s forthcoming RDNA 3 GPUs.

If the RDNA 3 cards turn out to be disappointing, NVIDIA could release a weak RTX 4070 with reduced CUDA cores, as the company will have no incentive to offer a high-performance card at an affordable price. If, on the other hand, RDNA 3 performs well, Nvidia might want an affordably-priced RTX 4070 Ti, which outperforms the 4080 12GB. Another option to counter high-performance RX 7000 cards would be to make the RTX 4070 a 12GB card with almost the same specs as the RTX 4080 but with fewer CUDA cores that would allow the company to argue that it is different from the canceled RTX 4080 12GB, even though both cards will still be based on the same AD 104 GPU.
