ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army has said that the country’s top military leaders believe that their former army chief and ex-president Pervez Musharraf, whose health condition has been described as critical, should return to Pakistan.
Last week, rumours of Musharraf’s death had surfaced on social media but the reports were soon denied by his family, saying that he was suffering from amyloidosis, a rare disease caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body.
“In such a situation, the institution (army) and (its) leadership’s stance is that Pervez Musharraf should return,” army’s spokesperson Major General Babar Iftikhar told a private TV station on Tuesday night. He said that the final decision of his return would be taken by his family.
“We have contacted his family. Once his family responds, we can make the required arrangements,” the spokesperson said. Days ahead of Iftikhar’s statement, defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif had said he believed that no hurdles should be created if the former dictator wants to come back to Pakistan.
Following the military spokesperson’s statement, former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif asked the coalition government led by his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif to facilitate the former dictator if he wishes to return to Pakistan, adding that he does not have any “personal enmity or tussle” with him.
“I have no personal enmity or tussle with Pervez Musharraf. I do not want anyone else to suffer the traumas that I have to endure for my loved ones,” the former PM posted on Twitter, adding he was praying for his (Musharraf’s) health.
Musharraf, 78, had left for UAE in 2016 on account of medical treatment, but he has not returned to Pakistan since then. In 2014, he was indicted for the November 2007 suspension of the country Constitution. The former military dictator was awarded death sentence in a high treason case by a special court in December 2019.
