Paramount+ has announced the arrival of Roberto Benigni for the first time in streaminga great honor for the platform, which on 8 December will propose the exegesis of the poetic text of Francis of Assisi, created by one of Italy’s most beloved Oscar winners.
During the evening event Benigni will talk about the figure of St. Francis of Assisi, starting from the man’s personal life, through unexpected curiosities and anecdotes, illustrating the conflicts, contradictions and evolutions that led him to become Saint and Patron of Italy . Here are some excerpts of what Benigni told in advance of the publication of the event on Paramount +.
““I will try to tell you about a true Francesco, with an extraordinary life that will amaze you. You won’t believe it! […] He is the character of the Middle Ages of which we know the most… he was so fascinating that everyone wrote about him… he was the greatest shaper of souls in the history of mankind […]. In the midst of so much violence and greed he demonstrates to everyone that a new world is possible: Francis is carrying out a real revolution. Francis is not the poor man of Assisi, he has a fiery gaze on the world, Francis who towers over everyone, Francis who is not afraid, indeed he has one fear, only one: that of becoming inhuman, indifferent to the fate of others, of last. And everyone follows him, this is Francesco’s great miracle…”
After introducing the figure of Francesco, the actor and director will continue with the fulcrum of the show, namely the exegesis of “The Canticle of the Creatures”, also known as the “Canticle of Friar the Sun”. The masterpiece of San Francesco, composed in 1224, is the first and oldest poetic text of Italian literature of which the author is known. “Il Cantico” is a grandiose praise to the Creator and to the beauty of nature, as Benigni recounts:
“It is the first poem written in Italian and not in Latin, the beginning of our Poetry which will become the most important in the world. Italian Poetry begins with Francesco… .the Canticle was revolutionary, because he praised creation. It was the first time, an absolute novelty. It was a text against the trend. Francesco’s charm is that he makes us understand that there are no soulless creatures on earth, he makes us feel that even grass, earth, water, wind, stones and stones have a soul. He has given new value to the mystery of creation. An invitation to participate in the nobility of the world”.
Roberto Benigni’s show is also part of Paramount+’s project to produce 150 original international contents by 2025, including an important portfolio of Italian productions.
