Disney published the first trailer for the live action reissue of Pinocchio, one of his first Great Classics (and of course, regardless, one of the most famous fairy tales ever). To clarify: some time ago a first teaser was released, but this is the real prologue. It lasts about two minutes and you see a lot of things – especially the finally animated puppet, not only static as we had seen in the teaser, but also various other characters, including the Cat and the Fox, the Jiminy Cricket and Geppetto, who is portrayed by Tom Hanks.

The film, we recall, is directed by Robert Zemeckiswho also collaborated on the screenplay adaptation, and in addition to Tom Hanks the cast includes:

  • Cynthia Erivo (Blue Fairy)
  • Luke Evans (Coachman)
  • Kyanne Lamaya (Fabiana)
  • Giuseppe Battiston (Fire Eater)
  • Lewin Lloyd (Candlewick)
  • Sheila Atim (Mrs. Vitelli, unreleased character)
  • Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (double Pinocchio)
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt (double Jiminy Cricket)
  • Keegan-Michael Key (double the Fox)
  • Lorraine Bracco (double the seagull Sofia, another new character)

Pinocchio will debut directly on Disney + on September 8, 2022, which is exactly in two weeks. For the avoidance of doubt, we remind you that Netflix is also producing an adaptation of the tale by Carlo Collodi: it will be made in stop motion and directed by Guillermo del Toro. As you can imagine, Del Toro’s version has slightly darker and more gothic tones – it closely resembles some of Tim Burton’s works, so to speak. It will be released on Netflix around Christmas.
