Pixel 8 will have a whole new camera: here’s why

Over time we have increasingly appreciated the commitment made by Google in the photographic sector of its people smartphonesculminating this year with the Pixel 7 which presented interesting innovations precisely in terms of image processing.

Google does not seem to want to stop and for Pixels 8 could offer some even more exciting news. If the leap from Pixel 6 to Pixel 7 was relevant in terms of hardware and photographic performance, still more relevant it could be what will happen between Pixel 8 and Pixel 7.

The well-known leaker Kuba Wojciechowski managed to get his hands on a preview version of the Google Camera Go app, within which gods were found references to the upcoming Pixel 8 and their photographic capabilities. As you can see from the image below, these references (associated with the codenames “Huskies” and “Shiba” which would identify Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro) indicate the support of allo devices staggered HDR.

Staggered HDR is a particular HDR algorithm that provides the possibility of shoot simultaneously several images with different apertures in order to realize HDR on the resulting photograph.

Compared to classic HDRwhich we find on the Pixel 7 and earlier and which provides for serial shooting of several images to make the final one, you would have an advantage in terms of speed of processing (because the different shots take place simultaneously) and in terms of qualityprecisely because the simultaneous release would be more robust in situations where the subject is moving or there is little light.

The other interesting look related to the implementation of staggered HDR for the new Pixel 8 is that this algorithm cannot be supported at the hardware level from the 50 MP Samsung GN1 sensor that we find on Pixel 7 and Pixel 6. This means that, in the event that staggered HDR really arrives, the Pixel 8 they will also have a new sensor.

In short, it would be double step forward compared to Pixel 7, both in terms of software processing, with all the positive implications of staggered HDR, and both in terms of hardware because obviously the new sensor would be more performing.

This would confirm once again how much Google points on the photographic aspect for its smartphones, to the point that it would already be ready to renew the photographic sensor of the Pixel 8, compared to previous years in which we have seen the same sensor photographic be present from the third to the fifth generation of Pixels.
