LUCKNOW: Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) Lucknow has become the second government hospital in North India, and the first in Uttar Pradesh, to receive full accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare (NABH). As of now, only ILBS holds full NABH accreditation.
NABH is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India (QCI), and is the apex body for accreditation of healthcare organizations in India. The accreditation will help RMLIMS to attract more patients, and it will also help to improve the quality of care that it provides.
In a press conference, RMLIMS director, Prof Soniya Nityanand, said, “We are proud to be the second government hospital in North India to receive NABH accreditation. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we meet the highest standards of patient care.”
She added that the institute intends to continue to strive ceaselessly towards higher standards of quality in patient safety and care delivery. Prof Nityanand informed that the institute was awarded the accreditation after it successfully completed a rigorous assessment process that evaluated its performance in areas such as patient safety, quality, and infrastructure.
RMLIMS applied for NABH accreditation in 2019, but the process was delayed due to Covid-19. The institute was given over 400 improvement recommendations in 2022. Two more inspections were conducted in 2023, with 88 recommendations made in the second inspection in April. The institute was finally accredited in June.
Citing the journey, Prof Smita Chauhan of the General Surgery department said that the institute established a quality cell to conduct audits and quality improvement programs, and launched a patient safety program that includes initiatives such as the introduction of patient ID bands, safety measures in patient transport, and the establishment of emergency codes and protocols.
She added that the institute also provided continuous training and education programs for paramedical staff and residents, and established a robust grievance redressal and patient feedback mechanism.
Medical Superintendent of the Institute, Prof Vikram Singh, informed that the institute fulfilled all infrastructure-related, legal, material management, and hospital procurement norms as per NABH standards.
