The Munster family is having a great time with director Rob Zombie in the latest set photo from The Munsters, a feature film adaptation of the original comedy series. Presenting a new cast as reimagined versions of the classic characters, the reboot stars Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, and Dan Roebuck as Grandpa. The Munsters serves as the first PG-rated movie from Zombie as the plan is for the film to be very faithful to its source material.
Taking to Instagram, Zombie shared a new pair of images straight from the set of The Munsters in Hungary. The first photo is of the director taking a selfie alongside his three main cast members, shedding a new look at the three as they’ll appear in the film. The photo also includes an alternate look for Herman with sunglasses and a skull-adorned shirt. Another image is of the on-set camera’s viewfinder, revealing a look at the actual footage used for the film. It appears to be for a scene featuring all three with a Lily speaking on the telephone.
In the caption, Rob Zombie says, “Greetings from Budapest! Heading into the weekend with my very own Monster Squad… I mean Munster Squad! Dig these 3 groovy ghoulies!”
Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Dan Roebuck serve as the main cast members. Rob Zombie has been oddly silent about the inclusion of family members Eddie and Marilyn, who were featured prominently in the original sitcom. It’s presumed they will be included in one way or another as their omission would be too glaring, but Zombie has not as of yet divulged if the characters will in fact be featured, or who will be playing them if they are.
Other cast members include Richard Brake as Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang, Sylvester McCoy as Igor, Jorge Garcia as Floop, Catherine Schell as Zoya Krupp, Cassandra Peterson as Barbara Carr, Jeremy Wheeler as Mr. Gateman, Tomas Boykin as Lester Dracula, and Dee Wallace as the voice of “Good Morning Transylvania.”
Rob Zombie Has Rebuilt 1313 Mockingbird Lane from Scratch
One way Rob Zombie has sought to make The Munsters movie faithful to the sitcom was to recreate the house at 1313 Mockingbird Lane from scratch. This meant traveling to Budapest to have the home built using blueprints based on the home as it was featured in the original version. Zombie went the extra mile by having the neighboring homes in Mockingbird Heights built as well, sparing no expense to achieve the level of detail he was striving for with this film.
Fans of Zombie may feel that the reboot of The Munsters is in good hands. Though Zombie is known for directing horror films that are much darker than something like The Munsters, he has long been open about how much he loves the original series. As a huge fan who has a fond appreciation for the sitcom, coupled with two decades of experience as a filmmaker, Zombie just might be the perfect person for the job. It will be interesting to see how the film turns out and how it’s received by fans of the franchise.
The Munsters is still filming and is expected to arrive sometime later this year, both in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock, but an exact premiere date has not yet been revealed.
