Ukranian officials said Friday that their troops had entered the southern city of Kherson and were retaking control of the regional capital from Russian forces after months of fighting.
“Kherson is returning under the control of Ukraine, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are entering the city,” Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence said Friday, urging Russian soldiers to surrender. The announcement came hours after Russia announced it had completed its withdrawal of all its troops from the west bank of the Dnieper River.
A Ukrainian official, who was not authorized to speak and asked for anonymity, said earlier Friday that Ukrainian forces had entered three regions of Kherson city, including the central Suvorovsky region. Ganna Malyar, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, told The Washington Post on Friday that Ukranian forces were still in large part approaching the city, but that “special units” were already in.
A large crowd of canting revelers, some draped in Ukranian flags, gathered Friday in Kherson’s central square to celebrate, according to videos shared widely on social media, verified by The Washington Post.
