Contrary to previous rumors, AMD would appear to intend to present three Ryzen 7000X3D processors with 8, 12 and 16 cores to the CES 2023. In the past it was rumored that the new offer would stop at two models, moreover one with 6 cores and one with 8 cores.

The new rumors come from the South Korean newspaper Quasarzone (retorted on Twitter), which Zen 4 CPUs with 3D V-Cache are said to be pretty certain to have clock rates identical or very similar to counterparts without more memory. The 5800X3D, on the other hand, is 400 and 200 MHz lower than the Ryzen 7 5800X in terms of base and boost clocks.

The new solutions could take the name of Ryzen 9 7950X3D (16 cores) e Ryzen 9 7900X3D (12 cores), while as regards the 8-core model there is no certainty: the debate revolves around Ryzen 7 7700X3D or 7800X3D.

The current Ryzen 7 7950X sees 64 MB of L3 cache inside: in the case of the X3D variant, AMD should add 128MB of L3 cache64 MB for each chiplet, bringing the total calculation of the L3 cache to 192 MB. The modus operandi shouldn’t change: adding memory will happen by placing a layer of SRAM on top of the die (in AMD parlance, CCD).

We have already seen, testing the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, how important even just 64 MB more L3 cache can be with video games, so a doubling should be even more beneficial because it will allow a greater amount of data to reside near the cores, without that the CPU has to fetch them externally.

According to rumors, all upcoming X3D models will have the same TDP of 170W, identical to the existing 16- and 12-core models but higher in the 8-core comparison, as the 7700X caps at 105W. Even the prices are rumored to be not very different from those of the current Ryzen 7000 counterparts, the only thing left to understand is whether AMD will allow overclocking or will put limits on it as happened for the 5800X3D.
