With Shazam about to become the lead of his own series again, a slew of variant covers reveals the Mightiest Mortal is going back to his old look.

It’s been a long time since it’s been seen, but Shazam is finally returning to an outfit longtime fans may recognize. Covers for the world’s Mightiest Mortal’s upcoming series reveal that Billy Batson’s heroic alter ego is going back to his old look.

As one of the oldest comic book heroes on the block, readers everywhere can identify the original Captain Marvel with his red uniform and the giant yellow lighting bolt emblazoned across his chest. It’s a timeless look that’s rarely changed in the near century he’s been around. However, like most other characters in the DCU during the New 52, Shazam’s costume got a streamlined update to really bring the hero into the 21st century. While it wasn’t a major departure from how Billy Batson had looked for decades, his change in appearance was joined by a notable change in personality, souring the new and improved Shazam for many.

Shazam is Reclaiming His Iconic Appearance

But after over a decade since the change, the Big Red Cheese is going back to his iconic look for his latest adventure. Several covers for the first issue of Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s upcoming Shazam series have begun hitting the internet. And if the cover art is any indication, Shazam is returning to his old, pre-Flashpoint appearance. Variants by artists such as Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner, Mike Deodato, Ariel Colon, Chris Samnee, and Dan Mora all feature the beloved hero wearing a costume more in-line with his Golden Age appearance rather than the updated New 52 design. Gone is the hood, shoulder clasps, and extraneous lines, and in their place is the hero’s sash belt, half-cape, and classic boots. There are a few tiny adjustments, but the design is more like Shazam’s classic self than it’s been in a while.

Shazam’s last big update came during his backup’s in Justice League during the New 52. Not only was Shazam’s look updated for a new audience, but Billy Batson’s personality was changed quite a bit in this new timeline. Instead of being a purehearted soul chosen as Earth’s Champion for his moral fiber, Billy’s new characterization was a bit more selfish than his previous interpretation, and only chosen out of desperation. It was a fairly controversial change for fans, with many not liking the new direction. But it seems like fans of the classic Shazam are about to get their traditional version back.

Shazam’s Old Personality May Come With His Old Costume

While Billy has grown in the last few years, many fans of Shazam miss the hero who expressed childlike wonder at the world and possessed a heart of gold. The return of Billy Batson’s old duds could signify that Waid and Mora’s new series will see a return of the Shazam people remember from before DC’s big Flashpoint reset. He may not get to be called Captain Marvel anymore, but getting his old clothes back is sure to put a smile on certain readers’ faces. Fans can see the return of Shazam’s classic uniform when Shazam #1 releases May 2nd, 2023.
