Everything is ready for it clash of the titans, between industry leader Qualcomm against rising star MediaTek. Technically the reality is not this, either because MediaTek is not a rising star – has been on the market for years – and both because the industry leader in sales it is a title that the two contend on the wire. The point is that MediaTek has focused on low- or medium-low-end chips for some time, leaving the field free for Qualcomm which has established itself as technology leader in the eyes of enthusiasts.
But for some time MediaTek has decided to aim for the topand the Dimension 9200 represents the most serious attempt made to date to erase the reputation of second-tier, almost B-series chipmakers. In 2023 Qualcomm could have a more credible rival on the high end, i.e. where the greatest profit margins are concentrated. And in a time of contraction like this, selling many “precious” chips is not trivial for keeping the coffers, put to the test by the crises.
