South African firm Tiger Brands has tapped former Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Polycarp Igathe as chief growth officer for all its markets effective December 1.

Mr Igathe, who previously served as a chief commercial officer at Equity Bank before stepping down to try his luck in politics, will be tasked with creating new markets and expanding the business across Africa.

Mr Igathe worked at the company as the Managing Director (MD) of its East African unit before leaving to join British downstream petroleum company Vivo Energy which operates Shell.

“Igathe brings to Tiger Brands strong commercial capability, as well as marketing, sales, strategy and business leadership experience through multi-geography leadership roles across Africa,” said Tiger Brands in a statement.

A seasoned executive, Igathe has also in the past occupied executive roles at leading brands including Coca-Cola, Kenya Breweries, Haco Industries where he served as MD for 10 years.  

“I look forward to the diverse set of capabilities and knowledge of the continent that Polycarp will bring to driving the execution of our ambitious growth strategy for the Rest of Africa business and his broader contribution to the development and execution of the Tiger Brands business strategy,” Tiger Brands CEO Noel Doyle said.

Igathe holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Sociology from the University of Nairobi.
