We recently wrote about how SpaceX reviewed the price from Starlink in Italy making it a little cheaper for new and old users as well as providing a way to experience satellite connectivity through the constellation of the company at a subsidized price. Information about the new limit are contained within a public document from SpaceX called “Fair Use policy”. In particular, the limit would be dedicated to domestic users (excluding subscriptions for campers or with portability) who regularly use the connection during peak hours, identified from 7:00 to 23:00. Users will then have an ad profile priority access (Priority Access) which is renewed at the beginning of the month but it can be “degraded” to basic access (Basic Access) in case the traffic of 1 TB / month during peak hours. This does not mean however that SpaceX it will completely remove connectivity to Starlink for the remaining days.
L’basic access will have a reduction in speed especially when connectivity is more congested with users who still have thepriority access which will continue to have high performance. According to the same SpaceX, at risk would be 10% of current users, a number that could however grow with the expansion of the service. The company also points out that particularly bandwidth-sensitive services, such as the streaming, they might be interested. In areas where there are fewer users or less data usage, people may not notice a difference between priority access and basic access.
If a user still wants to keep thepriority access to Starlink even surpassing the limit from 1 TB / month during peak hours, you can request an additional package at a cost of $ 0.25 / GB. Clearly this last option is to be considered a solution “extreme” (in terms of economic convenience) in case of need while it would be better for users to find the right compromise of use on connectivity. An example could be to perform backups or other operations where the user is not directly involved (downloads, software updates) between 11:01 pm and 6:59 am in order to avoid switching tobasic access exceeding the limit. In that time slot the calculation of the data exchanged will not be counted.
Users will be able to monitor the connection status and data consumption within their account page. As you can read on the official website page “Starlink is a limited resource that will continue to grow as we launch more satellites. To serve the greatest number of people with high-speed Internet, we need to manage the network to balance Starlink’s supply with user demand.”.
