Guillermo del Toro is putting a different spin on Pinocchio, with a darker twist to the classic story, according to reports from Vanity Fair. The award-winning director spoke on his upcoming adaptation and the direction he is taking with the beloved character. In a significant change for the fairy tale, del Toro is grounding his story in a realistic setting. Pinocchio takes place during the rise of fascism in pre-World War II Italy, where a foreboding military officer controls the area. Images from the film were released in a tweet from Vanity Fair, seen below.

In his latest movie, Guillermo del Toro sees similarities between Pinocchio and another iconic monster.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I’ve always been very intrigued by the links between Pinocchio and Frankenstein,” the director said. “They are both about a child that is thrown into the world. They are both created by a father who then expects them to figure out what’s good, what’s bad, the ethics, the morals, love, life, and essentials, on their own. I think that was, for me, childhood. You had to figure it out with very limited experience.”

Despite this darker outlook on the tale, del Toro hopes to keep his latest film family-friendly.

“These are times that demand from kids a complexity that is tremendous. Far more daunting, I think, than when I was a child. Kids need answers and reassurances…. For me, this is both for children and adults that talk to each other. It tackles very deep ideas about what makes us human.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is in a difficult situation this year, as another live-action adaptation of the fairy tale will hit the big screen as well. Disney+ is currently working on the remake, with Robert Zemeckis directing and Tom Hanks starring as Geppeto. Hank’s presence alone will surely draw a crowd, and del Toro will hope to compete with the film with the two movies releasing so close together.

Who is Involved in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Aside from the director himself, Pinocchio presents a star-studded cast across the board. Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Ewan McGregor (Star Wars), Cate Blanchett (The Aviator), Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange), Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) all appear in del Toro’s latest film.
