The Conners may be better off being canceled in light of the new updates about the Roseanne spin-off. ABC’s top-rated sitcom is already confirmed for season 6. Beyond that, however, its fate is hanging in the balance. Considering how popular The Conners is, there’s already interest in knowing what the future lies for the show’s titular family. That being said, while there’s an undoubted clamor to see more of Dan and his kids continue their story on the small screen, a couple of recent updates about The Conners hint that it will be so much better if ABC pulls the plug on it.

It’s an understatement to say that The Conners has gone through a lot. Born out of the original Roseanne sitcom’s revival, the show was retooled to become more of an ensemble series after Roseanne Barr’s firing from her eponymous sitcom. Narratively, The Conners‘ events were kicked off by the unexpected passing of Roseanne due to the opioid crisis. Instead of shying away from it, the ensemble show has actually leaned on showing the family’s struggles with the unexpected loss of their matriarch. As it approaches season 6, there are already rumblings that it may very well be the final outing for Dan and his kids.

The Conners Risks Ruining The Roseanne Franchise Legacy By Continuing

Previously, executive producer Bruce Helford indicated that The Conners season 6 could be the final season of the family sitcom. While ABC remains mum on the matter, he revealed that the cast and crew feel like it’s about time to wrap up the show. Helford also added that Darlene actress, Sara Gilbert has reached out to the network and asked them to give the team a heads-up if they decide to cancel the show, so they can build towards a more satisfying finale. This means that they would know beforehand if The Conners season 6 will indeed be its last.

That being said, a more telling sign that The Conners should end with season 6 is John Goodman’s overall perspective on the matter. In a new interview about the family comedy’s future, Goodman reveals that he feels that The Conners lasted longer than he thought. He also said that it was supposed to be just an eight-episode series, but ABC continued to renew it — as if he isn’t thrilled by the fact that The Conners has lasted this long, especially on the heels of what happened to the original Roseanne revival. That isn’t a good sign, considering that Goodman plays one of the most important characters in the series.

Based on Goodman’s comments, it sounds like he has lost interest in the show because he never expected it to last this long. If The Conners continue beyond season 6, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that he ends up leaving the sitcom, which will be a big blow to it after what happened to Roseanne. Between Goodman and Helford both sounding less enthused about the show continuing, ABC is better off pulling the plug from The Conners.

Why ABC Is Keen On Keeping The Conners On The Air

Since its premiere in the fall TV season of 2018, it has consistently been a ratings performer for ABC. This effectively explains why the network keeps on renewing it as Goodman said. In his separate interview, Helford also mentioned how it would understandably be tricky for ABC to let go of The Conners, especially since season 6 posted really great ratings. Per TV Line, however, the network is not having any discussions about canceling the series, and that makes sense given how popular it is. That being said, it should be a worrying sign for them that talents involved in The Conners aren’t exactly excited about the idea of more seasons.

Why The Conners Season 6 Is The Perfect Time To End The Show

Aside from Goodman feeling like The Conners has run its course, season 6 also offers the perfect time for the Roseanne spin-off to wrap things up. Mark has recently graduated from high school, and his story also indirectly addressed the previously-lingering plotline regarding David. Meanwhile, Louise is back from touring and can now focus on her marriage with Dan. Every other loose narrative that still needs to be resolved can be tackled in the next season, which includes Becky’s future, Darlene and Ben’s marriage, and most importantly, Bev’s fate. If The Conners season 6 stays on course, it has enough time to deliver a satisfying finale, just like Gilbert wants.
