What was initially a rumor has become official, as was to be expected after the latest events concerning the British Crown. There death of Queen Elizabeth II it is having an endless resonance, such as to force even the streaming industry to acknowledge it and act accordingly.
As you can imagine, the news concerns the Netflix production, The Crown, whose sixth and presumably final season was currently in production. As reported by Variety in an update, as that possibility had been hinted at but not initially confirmed, filming has been suspended.
“Out of respect, filming on The Crown has been suspended today. Filming will also be suspended on the day of Her Majesty the Queen’s funeral.”
The monarch, who ascended the throne in 1952, represented the oldest ruler in the world, given the ripe old age of 96 she has reached. She passed away surrounded by the affection of her family at Balmoral, her mansion in the Scottish Highlands where she spent her holidays, as announced on Twitter by the family on Thursday 8 September. She is succeeded by her eldest son, King Charles III.
His death came before the debut of the fifth season of the Netflix show, which will be presented premiered in November and which will include a new cast. THEmelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip, Dominic West will play Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki will play Princess Diana. Olivia Williams has been cast in the role of Camilla Parker Bowles and Jonny Lee Miller will be Prime Minister John Major.
Although the details have not been shared, the new season should focus on the events that happened in the 1990s, namely those that will lead to the death of Princess Diana in 1997. The sixth season recently included the 16-year-old, Rufus Kampa, for the role of the prince. Harry and 21-year-old Ed McVey for the part of Prince William, suggesting that the season will explore the aftermath of Diana’s death and the lives of the boys in the early 2000s.
