Based upon the brand-new synopsis for The Mandalorian season 3, the presence of the Empire’s Grand Admiral Thrawn is a major possibility.
A new synopsis for The Mandalorian season 3 has been released, featuring a big hint for Grand Admiral Thrawn. A trusted officer in the Imperial Navy and favored by Emperor Palpatine himself, Grand Admiral Thrawn was a primary villain in the animated Star Wars Rebels series and is expected to have a role in the upcoming live-action Ahsoka series. However, the possibility now exists that Thrawn could appear earlier in the next season of The Mandalorian.
One of the Empire’s rare alien officers due to widespread Imperial xenophobia, Grand Admiral Thrawn was a member of the Chiss Ascendency, an alien empire existing in the Unknown Regions beyond the Outer Rims. However, Thrawn was sent to investigate the Empire, eventually gaining an audience with Palpatine, who gave him a position in the Imperial Navy due to his brilliant mind as a genius tactician. Quickly rising through the ranks to become Grand Admiral, Thrawn was lost just before the original trilogy of Star Wars films alongside Ezra Bridger, Jedi apprentice to Kanan Jarrus. However, The Mandalorian season 2 confirmed Thrawn was still alive.
The Mandalorian S3’s “Dark History” & “New Villains” Synopsis Sets Up Thrawn
According to the new synopsis for The Mandalorian season 3, Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin will continue to be reunited with Grogu while “the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history”. It also teases “old allies and new enemies” who will be coming into play in Djarin’s Mandalorian adventures with Grogu. While the first trailer was largely focused on Djarin visiting Mandalore and potentially clashing with Bo-Katan Kryze, the synopsis does confirm that the New Republic will play a role, the galaxy’s dark history being the era of Empire.
It’s certainly possible that Grand Admiral Thrawn is part of that dark history the New Republic is struggling to erase. After all, previous seasons have seen Din Djarin dealing with the Imperial Remnant, agents of the Empire who refuse to stop fighting while serving leaders such as Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon. Likewise, Thrawn would definitely be considered a new enemy to Din Djarin, and a future Star Wars appearance has already been teased by Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian season 2.
How Thrawn Could Fit Into The Mandalorian Season 3
The majority of The Mandalorian season 3 will likely take place primarily on Mandalore as Djarin struggles to redeem himself after removing his helmet, and deals with his possession of the legendary Darksaber (and the authority that comes with it). As such, Grand Admiral Thrawn will likely play a background presence, perhaps planning the Remnant’s next moves or even setting up an Imperial threat that Djarin and his fellow Mandalorians could eventually unite against. However, Thrawn will likely only have a cameo presence in The Mandalorian season 3.
With the confirmation in The Mandalorian season 2 that Ahsoka Tano has been searching for Thrawn, it stands to reason that she’s looking for the Grand Admiral as a means to learn what happened to Ezra. While very little has been revealed about the upcoming Ahsoka series thus far, the confirmation of live-action versions of the Ghost crew from Rebels suggests finding Ezra and facing Thrawn will be a large part of the plot. As such, a Thrawn appearance in The Mandalorian season 3 will likely set up a greater role in Ahsoka with both series set for release in 2023.
