We have fresh information on the controversial sequel de Gladiatorthe famous film by Ridley Scott which definitively placed Russell Crowe in the Olympus of the most loved Hollywood actors in the early 2000s. As reported DeadlinesParamount has confirmed that the sequel, directed once again by Ridley Scott, will be released in US theaters on November 22, 2024. In Italy the date should be the same, or even anticipated by a day, but we’ll talk about it in due course.

We also know that Paul Mescal, nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Actor” for Aftersun, is in talks to be in the film as the lead character. Ridley Scott will produce alongside Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher and also co-wrote the screenplay with David Scarpa.

As first reported by Justin Kroll, Mescal is in contention to play Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), who in the new film will be a grown man as the story takes place many years after (about 25 – 30) the end of the first movie. As those who loved this film will well remember, Lucius was also the grandson of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), son of the Roman leader Marcus Aurelius, who killed his father to take the throne. The story could develop around this character and the strong influence that Massimo X Meridio had on him.

Recall that the sequel was officially approved by Paramount in 2018 and in the initial stages among the names rumored for the main role there was also Chris Hemsworth. Although those who saw the first film are well aware of the fate reserved for the main character, there was also talk of a possible guest appearance by Russell Crowe but at the moment there is no official confirmation.
