The Vampire Diaries‘ popularity led to the spin-offs, The Originals and Legacies, which have timelines that are set both during and after the events that take place during The Vampire Diaries timeline. Julie Plec, the creative mind behind all three series, faced the daunting task of launching two new shows whose characters’ origin stories are rooted in The Vampire Diaries. The writers had to intertwine ongoing storylines while introducing new plots that ensured the spin-offs could succeed on their own merit.
The Vampire Diaries’ first season takes place in 2009. On the first day of her junior year, Elena falls for the mysterious, hot new guy Stefan Salvatore, who happens to be a 162-year-old vampire. Stefan and his older brother Damon open Elena’s eyes to the mystical history surrounding the town of Mystic Falls that dates back as far as the mid-1800s.
Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson, two members of the family known as the Originals, the world’s oldest living vampires (over 1,000 years old), first appear in season 2 of The Vampire Diaries timeline. During season 4’s episode, “The Originals,” Klaus travels to New Orleans and discovers he impregnated werewolf Hayley Marshall which establishes the premise for The Originals. Klaus leaves Mystic Falls after season 4, making a brief appearance at the gang’s high school graduation.
When The Originals Is Set In The Vampire Diaries Timeline
During the penultimate episode of The Originals season 1, Hayley gives birth to Hope, who goes on to become a central character in Legacies. The first two seasons of The Originals take place at the same time as the events unfolding in seasons 5 and 6 of The Vampire Diaries timeline, during which several major characters are attending the fictitious Whitmore College.
The Vampire Diaries season 7 includes a three-year time jump, and the birth of Jo and Alaric’s twin daughters, Josie and Lizzie Saltzman. The girls are siphoners and members of the Gemini coven, and they serve as the inspiration for the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. During The Originals season 3, which aired simultaneously with season 7 of The Vampire Diaries, there is a brief convergence of the shows’ timelines. Caroline, the former drama major, is the mother of two young girls and a TV producer. She arrives in New Orleans seeking Klaus and learns nobody’s seen him in three years.
The Vampire Diaries series finale shows Alaric and Caroline getting ready to open the Salvatore School. Meanwhile, The Originals season 4 picks up five years after its season 3 finale. After spending years apart, Hayley and Hope reunite with Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, Kol, and Freya. The season focuses on 8-year-old Hope, who barely has a chance to get to know her dad before all the immortal Mikaelson siblings scatter because of “The Hollow.” During the finale, Hayley, at Alaric’s urging, enrolls Hope in the Salvatore School to protect her from her family’s enemies and to keep her Tribrid daughter’s burgeoning powers in check.
When Legacies Is Set in The Vampire Diaries Timeline
The fifth and final season of The Originals begins with a 7-year time jump, introducing fans to a teenage Hope. The show gives all the central characters satisfying send-offs and gets viewers emotionally invested in Hope beyond the confines of her family.
Legacies season 1 picks up two years after Klaus’ and Hayley’s deaths, making Hope 17 years old and Lizzie and Josie two years her junior. This raises a big continuity problem since Hope’s birthdate is 2012, and Lizzie and Josie’s is 2014. If viewers consider Legacies a fresh start for the franchise and set in the present day, this disparity becomes less of an issue. Legacies’ appeal lies in the next generation of supernatural creatures as opposed to relying on the popularity of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
Legacies’ Cancelation Ends The TVD Timeline
The Vampire Diaries timeline is a rather complicated one — however, it came to an end after it was announced that the spinoff series, Legacies, was canceled after 4 seasons on The CW. Legacies took a lot of creative liberties when it came to the pre-established TVD universe, such as Hope’s Tribrid status. Not only that, but characters like Kaylee Bryant’s Josie Saltzman received a terribly written exit from the series. There’s plenty to complain about when it came to Legacies, but while it wasn’t the most popular series out of all the TVD content out there, the reasoning behind the show’s cancelation doesn’t involve poor ratings. Instead, the series was canceled because of the CW’s acquisition, as the network is primarily controlled by Nexstar Media Group, which now has the controlling stake in the company. A number of popular shows on the network got canceled, including Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the Charmed reboot, and Dynasty – and Legacies was among the number sent to TV purgatory. So, this means that The Vampire Diaries timeline has finally come to an end.
