Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman doesn’t want any spinoff shows for the hit Netflix series and would rather focus on developing the main series.
Despite becoming an instant hit for Netflix, Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman doesn’t wish to adapt any of their other works into spinoffs. Joe Locke and Kit Connor star in the celebrated Netflix coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama series adapted from Oseman’s series of graphic novels. Heartstopper follows the blossoming relationship between schoolmates Charlie Spring (Locke) and Nick Nelson (Connor), as the pair fall for one another after they are seated together in a class.
As reported by RadioTimes, Oseman spoke to Attitude magazine about their hit series during an interview surrounding the author being named “Person of the Year.” Despite its early success guaranteeing Heartstopper‘s season 2 and 3 renewal, Oseman stated that there were no plans to create a shared television universe based on the author’s other works and telling Heartstopper‘s main story was more important to them than creating a large franchise. How Heartstopper Season 2 Will Expand The Series
While Heartstopper focused on Nick and Charlie’s main story, the pair are only one part of a shared world throughout Oseman’s works. Charlie made his first appearance in Oseman’s debut novel, Solitaire, and the book is focused on Charlie’s older sister Tori (Jenny Walser), who is also a point-of-view character in This Winter alongside Charlie. Oseman’s other novels, I Was Born For This, Loveless, and Radio Silence, also take place within the same universe as Heartstopper, but most stories focus on new characters who tend to be largely removed from Charlie and Nick’s family and friend groups.
The Netflix series has altered and included additional details to build on Heartstopper‘s world. The characters of Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), Tara (Corinna Brown), and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) were given their own individual storylines that play out alongside Charlie and Nick’s journeys. Rhea Norwood and Tobie Donovan’s Imogen and Isaac were original characters in the television series, with the latter intended to replace the novel character Aled because he would require a greater focus to do his story justice. Future Heartstopper seasons will introduce the wider cast, with casting calls confirming the graphic novel character, Sahar Zahid, debuting in season 2, portrayed by Leila Khan. Bradley Riches’ James McEwan will receive an expanded role after unnamed, minor appearances throughout season 1.
Heartstopper season 1 became a hit for Netflix upon its release, receiving critical acclaim and high viewership numbers. Nevertheless, Oseman isn’t keen on adapting their other works, but the main focus on quality brings reassurance on how the TV show will be handled. However, with Oseman expanding on the cast’s stories and the world throughout season 1, it is possible that the upcoming Heartstopper season 2’s stories can feature nods to the characters of Oseman’s other works.
