Will the Canon EOS R8 and RF-S 11-22mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM be released in February 2023?

At the end of November 2022 we wrote about some rumors about the future plans of Canon. As we know, the Japanese manufacturer will focus exclusively on solutions mirrorless expanding both the range of camera bodies and lenses. This will include both full-frame cameras as well APS-C with the RF attachment which will completely replace both EF and EF-S but also EF-M (in all cases produced with these bindings they will still be on the market for some time). Rationalizing the production and inventory part should also have a reduction in costs for the company.

During 2022 we saw the presentation of the new EOS R10 and EOS R7. These are the first mirrorless cameras with RF connection (RF-S) e APS-C sensor. This has allowed a reduction in the price without renouncing some advanced features. With this in mind, two products could arrive in the first part of next year, a camera body and a lens, dedicated to users who want a camera with an APS-C sensor.

Will Canon show EOS R8 and RF-S 11-22mm at CP+ 2023?

As often happens in these cases, there is currently no official confirmation from the company of its future plans. In recent days, however, two indiscretions concerning the new APS-C mirrorless Canon EOS R8 and the optics RF-S 11-22mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM. In both cases, these are solutions dedicated to the reduced format. Here’s what we know.

There EOS R8 camera, as can be guessed from the (unofficial) name, should be positioned between the EOS R10 and EOS R7. The announcement should take place at the Japanese photography fair called CP+ which will be held in February 2023. Second the rumors this model will have a new type of adjustable screen while, to reduce development and production costs, the sensor should be the same as the EOS R10, with a 24.2 MPixel resolution. Considering that the EOS R10 is around 900 euros (body only) while the EOS R7 is priced at around 1400 euros, Canon could place EOS R8 around the 1100-1200 euros.

As for the optics RF-S 11-22mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STMits presentation should always take place at CP+. The rumors indicate how Canon could announce three RF-S optics (including this one we are writing about) in 2023. In particular, two would have an optical design similar to that of EF-M solutions so as to reduce development and production costs in this case as well. We do not expect high prices for these models so as to provide a set of low-cost optics for those who want a low-cost kit (or expand their set without resorting to third-party ones or full-frame RF solutions).
