If you have not yet installed the updates released on the occasion of the Patch Tuesday of October on Windows 10 and Windows 11, in circulation since last Tuesday, perhaps it is better that you wait a little longer: Microsoft has confirmed that the patches cause network connectivity problems. Specifically, the operating system in certain situations fails to complete the handshake of the TLS (Transport Layer Security) and SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocols. Apps affected by the bug may return SEC_E_ILLEGAL_MESSAGE error message.

Microsoft was quick to release corrective updates, using the channel known as OOB (Out-Of Band); are found on Windows Update, but for now they are only for Windows 10 and Windows 11 21H2. Windows 11 22H2 is still “discovered” for the moment. However, the company is continuing to investigate the problem. Those who encounter the bug are invited by Microsoft to report them using the Feedback Hub:

  • Open the Feedback Hub using the Win + F combination or by searching for it in Start
  • Click Report a problem
  • Complete section 1. Enter your feedback
  • In section 2 Microsoft says to make sure they are checked Problem, Devices and Drivers and the subcategory Press, but it seems to us a bad copy / paste. Choose Network and Internet and then the subcategory General network problems it seems more appropriate.
  • In section 3 be sure to select New feedback
  • In section 4, you can add more information (optional) and record a short video clip recreating the problem

Let’s summarize the patch numbers involved:

  • Windows 10: KB5018410. Resolving OOB Patch: KB5020435
  • Windows 11 21H2: KB5018418. Resolving OOB Patch: KB5020387
  • Windows 11 22H2: KB5018427. Resolving OOB Patch: not yet online

The OOB patches are not yet available for installation on Windows Update: you have to manually download them from the Microsoft Update Catalog and then install them. Found HERE the OOB for Windows 11 21H2, HERE the one for Windows 10
