Within weeks of the release of Windows 11 22H2, Microsoft confirmed another bug present on the latest version of its PC operating system through a new post on the company’s official forum dedicated to the Tech Community.
The confirmation came directly from Ned PylePrincipal Program Manager of the Windows Server division, who pointed out that the latest version of the operating system has a performance problem when you make the copying large files from one computer to another, using the SMB protocol, but not only.
Reportedly, there is talk of a performance drop in SMB that can reach as much as 40% when copying files that weigh several gigabytes. The bug in question only affects devices equipped with Windows 11 22H2 and is not present on previous versions, so if you often use the SMB protocol it is advisable to postpone the update.
However, the problem does not exclusively concern those who use the network protocol, but it seems to be striking also the local copy of the files, although in this case the performance loss is likely not to reach the aforementioned peak. Pending an official fix, Microsoft has confirmed that robocopy or xcopy commands can be used with the / J parameter (example: robocopy \ someserver someshare c: somefolder somefile.ned / J).
This is a temporary patch that can help recover lost copying performance, but in the meantime Microsoft is working on a permanent solution, so we expect a corrective patch in the next few days.
