Windows 11, problems with Windows Hello and new compatibility lock (but it will not last long)

Microsoft has suspended the installation of Windows 11 22H2 on some systems due to some problems related to the operation of Windows Hello. The company has confirmed the existence of the bug, stating that the update causes problems in the authentication functionality on devices that make use of the Enhanced Sign-In Security feature.

On the systems involved, the problem manifests itself not only in accesses via biometrics (face or fingerprints), but also with those via PIN. Microsoft has however specified that this problem “should not occur on devices that enable Windows Hello after updating or installing Windows 11 22H2”, but only on those on which the authentication features are active before running the update .

Windows 11 2022 Update blocked on some systems until “mid-October”

Continuing with its extremely conservative strategy, therefore, Microsoft has added a new compatibility block (ID 40667045) which prevents the automatic distribution of the update on the affected systems. It should be emphasized that on these systems it is recommended not to manually install Windows 11 2022 Update: the operation is in fact possible through Media Creation Tool or other official tools provided by Microsoft, but it is better to wait until the block is removed.

When? Very soon as the problem can already be circumvented by installing the package KB5017389, the first optional cumulative update package released on Windows 11 2022 Update. The same fix is ​​also present on the updates released with Patch Tuesday in October, whose installation is mandatory for all users, and for this reason Microsoft has promised to remove the “mid October” compatibility lockso very soon.

Finally, remember that those who are unable to log in via PIN or biometric scan can overcome the obstacle at the moment simply by entering the password linked to their account.
