With The Rings of Power revisiting Tolkien’s beautiful world, fans have also reminisced about The Lord of the Rings trilogy, full of wonderful characters fans love deeply and not just within the Fellowship. Faramir only made his first appearance about halfway through The Two Towers, but he became a fan favorite almost immediately due to his virtue and kindness towards the Hobbit and his people.

10 He Was Second Best
Denethor, the father of Faramir and Boromir, loved his firstborn far more than he loved Faramir. This point is made obvious throughout the films time and time again, but it’s not something he (or the fans) would ever get used to.
Living in the shadow of others is incredibly painful, and no amount of praise or appreciation from others will heal that hurt if it doesn’t come from the one person it’s most needed from. Faramir loved his father with all his heart, but that love was never openly returned to him.
9 His Men Died At Osgiliath
As the steward of Gondor, Denethor commanded Faramir to retake Osgiliath after it had been lost. This mission would almost certainly bring death to any who attempted it, but the Captain of Gondor obeyed his father’s command.
Faramir was horribly wounded when he returned to Minas Tirith, but his companions and followers all fell on the field of battle. The pain of that knowledge was probably more scarring than the arrow that had pierced his armor.
8 He Lost His Mother Early In Life
The wife of Denethor is never shown on screen throughout The Lord of the Rings films as she died long before, but the emptiness she left in Faramir’s heart is sure to have affected him.
Faramir was only five years old when his mother passed, and the fact that his father loved Boromir more must have made Faramir incredibly lonely. It’s clear his mother made quite an impression on him, however, as he grew up to be a noble and honorable man with a good heart. Denethor did not possess those qualities and certainly didn’t pass them along.
7 He Was Denied A Chance To Prove His Worth

Faramir always aimed to please his father and bring great honor to the realm of Gondor. So when a meeting was called by Elrond in Rivendell, Faramir wished to go so that he could bring glory to his people and make Denethor proud.
Unfortunately, Denethor had no trust in Faramir. He believed only Boromir would succeed at bringing the Ring to Gondor. Instead of being grateful for the offer that his son made, Denethor ridiculed Faramir and let him know how little he thought of him. Despite his father’s displeasure with him, Faramir became a venerable hero later on in the eyes of fans.
6 He Couldn’t March On The Black Gate
Because of the terrible wound he suffered at Osgiliath, Faramir was placed in the Houses of Healing so that he could fully recover. During his time there, Aragorn led an army of Rohirrim and Gondorian soldiers to storm the Black Gate.
This attack was vital for the success of Sam and Frodo on their journey to Mount Doom. The battle drew attention away from Orodruin and towards the entrance of the Sauron’s realm. Faramir was unable to help his companions fight in that glorious battle, so he missed out on what would have been considered a great honor.
5 Aragorn Stole His Thunder
Since he is a man of great humility, Faramir probably didn’t care about this much, but all of his valiant deeds were overshadowed by the return of Aragorn to Gondor. Faramir’s greatest moments were hardly noticed in comparison to the return of the Isildur’s heir.
Fans of Faramir understandably believe he was robbed of recognition, even though many also love Aragorn. It’s no consolation that Aragorn proved his worth many times. Faramir had such a painful life that it only seemed fair he would receive great honor from his people one day. Sadly, that’s something that isn’t overtly shown in the films.
4 He Lost His Dear Brother
Faramir and Boromir had a great deal of love for each other, and they bonded throughout much of their lives together. It would have been difficult for them to part ways for even a little.
When Boromir left for Rivendell, there was no way of knowing when they would see each other again. It’s to be assumed they believed they would meet again, but Boromir’s untimely death at the hands of Uruk-hai shattered Faramir’s heart. It’s undoubtedly one of the worst things to happen to any of the characters in the trilogy.
3 His Family Never Saw Him Marry
By the time the War for the Ring ended, Faramir was the only surviving member of his family. During his healing process after the attempt to retake Osgiliath, Faramir and Éowyn fell in love.
The two of them would later marry, but Faramir would never get the chance to celebrate with his brother, father, or mother. It’s fair to assume he was robbed of greater joy on his and Éowyn’s wedding day because of their absence.
2 His Soul Was Tormented By War
When Faramir first meets Frodo and Sam, he sees that a man was laying dead near them. He makes a comment about how the soldier probably was forced to fight and would have rather stayed home in peace. His sense of duty was no different from anyone else on the battlefield. It’s a brilliant line and one of the wisest quotes in the entire trilogy.
It bothered Faramir to know that much of the killing and dying was done by people who meant no ill will toward each other. The man that lay dead would never see his family again, and that’s something Faramir and his men were responsible for. That didn’t sit well with the Captain of Gondor, and life would be very different if he had his way.
1 He Couldn’t Earn Denethor’s Love
One of the greatest driving forces in Faramir’s life was to earn his father’s approval. To see the pride in Denethor’s eyes would have given Faramir great joy. But when that chance finally came, he was forced to make a difficult decision.
When Frodo and Sam came to Ithilien, Faramir took them into custody and learned they possessed the Ring. He could have easily taken it by force and one his father’s love, but Faramir knew it would be wrong and ended up denying his own desires for the good of Middle-earth. It was the right thing to do, but it wouldn’t have made it any less painful.
