The superhero sequel X-Men: Apocalypse is not exactly looked back upon as one of the better superhero movies of recent years, but its titular star, Oscar Isaac, remains happy with the experience. In the film, released in 2016, Isaac plays Apocalypse, an ancient mutant awakened in 1983 with renewed plans to take over the world. Of course, it’s up to the X-Men to put a stop to these plans.

X-Men: Apocalypse had reviews that were a bit of a mixed bag, and Isaac would agree that the film has its problems. That doesn’t mean he disowns the movie or has any regret in taking part in its production. In a new interview with The New York Times, the Moon Knight star explained how much he loved the Apocalypse character as a lifelong X-Men fan, making it basically a dream come true to play the supervillain, even if he couldn’t see what was happening most of the time. As Isaac puts it:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“No, I don’t disown it. I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why. There were these amazing actors involved that I really wanted to work with, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. I collected X-Men growing up, and I loved Apocalypse, I just found him such a freaky, weird character. And then you get there and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got all these prosthetics on. I’ve got a suit on. I can’t move. I can’t see anybody. All these actors I wanted to work with — I can’t even see who they are.’”

Ultimately, Isaac remembers his X-Men: Apocalypse filming experience as very positive, regardless of what any critics would later say about the film. Be that as it may, Isaac also now wishes the film would have been “better,” attributing some of the movie’s problems to the way the filmmakers had treated the Apocalypse character.

“I still think back to that time with fondness. I wish it would have been a better film and that they would have taken care of the character a little better, but those are the risks.”

Oscar Isaac Has Since Returned to Marvel

After his time in the X-Men universe, Oscar Isaac more recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the Disney+ series Moon Knight. While the series is being developed as a one-off, the possibility is always there that he could appear in other MCU projects in the future. A return to the role of Apocalypse is not impossible, either, considering Patrick Stewart has been confirmed to appear as Professor X in the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Isaac is also set to provide the voice of Spider-Man 2099 in next year’s animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This follows recent appearances in the films The Card Counter, Dune, and Big Gold Brick. The actor also hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live for the first time in March.

You can watch Isaac in Moon Knight, which is streaming on Disney+.
