The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes amps up the hype with a new teaser poster. The film, which is due in theaters on November 17, is based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 novel of the same name, providing a prequel to her Hunger Games trilogy following the youthful days of President Coriolanus Snow. The Hunger Games novels were previously adapted into a quartet of films between 2012 and 2015 starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a teen who is instrumental in the rebellion against a dystopian government.

Today, Lionsgate shared a brand-new teaser poster for the Hunger Games prequel.

The poster is a riff on the iconic teaser posters of the original films, which utilized the Mockingjay logo that would come to represent Katniss’ leadership of the rebellion. This time, the Mockingjay (the titular songbird) is doing battle with a golden serpent while surrounded by blooming roses, the favorite flower of President Snow.

Everything We Know About The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Considering the fact that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place decades before Katniss and her friends were born, there isn’t going to be too much crossover between the two films other than the setting and the character of Snow (Tom Blyth). However, the film will detail the events of the tenth Hunger Games, setting up a lot of the socio-political threads that will be picked up by the original trilogy. It will also feature Jason Schwartzman as an ancestor of Stanley Tucci’s inimitable commentator Caesar Flickerman.

In addition to Blyth and Schwartzman, the film’s cast is jam-packed with recognizable faces. This includes Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, the District 12 tribute who forms an unlikely bond with Snow. Also on hand are Hunter Schafer, Viola Davis, and Peter Dinklage.

One other connection The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes shares with the original films is director Francis Lawrence. He has returned to helm this latest entry in the franchise after taking the reins with the second film Catching Fire and following that with Mockingjay Part One and Part Two. While it remains to be seen if the new film can capture the spirit of the originals, it has a cast and crew gathered that will help it put its best foot forward.
