Christian Bale joins the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, but after Google searching his character, Bale had one specific worry.

Christian Bale has been mostly silent on his arrival in the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, but he has now spoken to Total Film about taking on the role of Gorr the God Butcher. While there have been plenty of good things said about Bale’s performance by co-star Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi, this is the first time the man himself had discussed the role, and it seems that he had some early worries about the part as he feared potentially being made to wear a G-String.

Christian Bale has played some iconic roles in his career, from psychopaths to superheroes and everything in between, and now he is adding a comic book villain to that list. However, Gorr is not just any villain and has already been set up as one of the most complex antagonists in the MCU’s history. When it came to doing a little research on the character though, Bale was faced with a terrifying possibility following a Google search. He said:

“You sort of go, ‘I know what he does.’ It’s right there in the name, isn’t it? But I did make the mistake of Googling him and, oh no! [In the comics] he runs around in a G-string all the time. And I thought, ‘They don’t have the right man for that!’ And then Taika quickly dispelled any notions of running around in that. But I always did think what he could do with this in front of a bluescreen – he could chuck on whatever he wants later on.”

Gorr Has Already Tested Well With Audiences

While most Marvel fans still have a couple of weeks to wait and see Christian Bale’s MCU debut, director Taika Waititi recently said that Gorr is “the most sympathetic villain they’ve had” and he “tested the highest of any villain Marvel has had.” In addition to this, Hemsworth praised Bale’s way of playing the character and bringing out his sympathetic side so that audiences will get exactly where he is coming from in his actions. He said:

“[He brings] exactly what you’d want, hope, and expect. It’s nuance, complexity, depth, a sort of quirkiness to it that I didn’t see on the page. And with any sort of classic villain, the fact that you find yourself empathizing or asking questions that they’re asking, or ideas that they’re posing, it’s not just stock standard sort of evil villain.”

Tessa Thompson added her own thoughts on Bale’s performance, and how she was almost mesmerized watching the actor at work. She said:

“He would make choices that you would be like, ‘Oh.’ It was just so fun to watch, and such dexterity, and also what he did with his body. And he’s really in it in the way that you would assume Christian is, but he also has a sense of humor about it.”

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in cinemas on July 8 as it aims to follow in the footsteps of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and become Marvel’s second hit of the year.
