Star Trek’s “lost movie,” Day of Blood will bring together crews from the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and even Lower Decks. Day of Blood is the first-ever Star Trek comic book crossover, and promises to be an epic event. Spinning out of IDW’s new line of Trek comics, Day of Blood will play out through the summer, and will be the “lost movie” fans have craved.

IDW unveiled more information on the forthcoming Day of Blood on Comicbook.com, including a first look at Malachi Ward’s covers, shared below. The event kicks off with this year’s Star Trek Free Comic Book Day Special, and will continue on in the pages of Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant. The two crews must unite to stop Kahless’ genocidal Red Path cult, which has sworn to destroy the universe’s god-like beings–regardless of the cost. Among the Trek luminaries appearing in Day of Blood are representatives from many shows: Spock and Scotty from the Original Series, Data, Dr.Crusher and Ro Laren from The Next Generation, Ben and Jake Sisko and Worf of Deep Space Nine and Tom Paris and B’Elanna Torres from Voyager; the event will also feature Lieutenant Shaxs from Lower Decks, in a period set before that show. Day of Blood will be written by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Ramon Rosanas and Angel Unzueta. In describing Day of Blood, Cantwell said, “I sincerely believe that Day of Blood is the ‘lost episode/movie/epic limited series’ that Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and The Next Generation fans have been dying for.

As stated earlier, Day of Blood grows out of the god-war raging in the Star Trek universe. The clone Emperor Kahless of the Klingon Empire has declared war on the god-like beings of the universe. Coercing the Shapers of Sardakesh to fashion him a weapon capable of slaughtering gods, Kahless and his followers, who call themselves the Red Path, have embarked on a crusade of terror. The Bajoran Prophets sent Captain Sisko back to our reality to stop Kahless; Starfleet begrudgingly gives Sisko its most advanced ship, the Theseus to fulfill his mission and crews it with characters culled from various incarnations of the franchise.

Star Trek Comics Will Provide the Story the Movies and Shows Cannot

Now these beloved characters are coming together to stand against Kahless and his nihilistic crusade in an epic story unlike any seen before in the franchise. Comics are capable of bringing fans Trek stories that the shows and movies cannot, a fact co-writer Cantwell acknowledges. It would be impossible to tell such a story on the screen, as some of the actors who played the characters are now deceased–but comics provide the opportunity to bring these icons together. Furthermore, comics can depict epic space battles that television shows and movies just cannot.

Day of Blood will take full advantage of the comics medium to tell a grand story that will unite nearly every crew seen in the Star Trek universe. The battles will be more brutal and the stakes will be higher than ever. With an amazing ensemble, and epic story, Day of Blood will be the “lost movie” bringing together the best characters from various Star Trek shows, including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

The Star Trek Free Comic Book Day Special will be available May 6.
