The official DC Comics social media accounts spoil the big Black Adam surprise cameo in a new marketing video for the highly anticipated DCEU movie.
Warning: This article includes MAJOR spoilers for Black AdamThe official DC Comics social media accounts spoil the big Black Adam surprise cameo through a new viral video. One of the most highly anticipated DCEU movies in the last several years has been Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, as the star has been attached to the DC role for more than a decade. After being stuck in development hell, it wasn’t until 2021 that Black Adam finally went into principal photography, and as of this week, Johnson’s DC project is finally opening in theaters worldwide.
As Black Adam focuses on telling Teth-Adam’s brutal origin story, the film also wastes no time cementing itself in the larger DCEU, which has been up and running since 2013’s Man of Steel. While introducing many new characters from the comics, Johnson’s solo-film also sees the return of established players, including Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. But Black Adam also brings back the hero that began the DCEU, as Henry Cavill reprises the role of Superman in the post-credits scene.
Despite Black Adam officially opening for preview screenings on Thursday, October 20, the official DC Comics Twitter account decided to spoil the Superman cameo. The comic publisher shares a new viral marketing video for Black Adam, in which Johnson’s character is texting back and forth with Superman. The text essentially teases a coming conflict between them in the DCEU, as is the purpose of the movie’s post-credits scene.
Why Did DC & Johnson Spoil Superman’s Cameo Early?
Many may wonder why DC (and even Johnson to some degree) decided to spoil Superman’s Black Adam cameo early, since the film just opened this week. Unfortunately, the Black Adam post-credits scene had already leaked on social media, thanks to users who saw the film at its premiere and were able to record it on their phones. Johnson, who also confirmed it was his idea to get Cavill’s Superman to cameo in Black Adam, has also been asked non-stop in interviews, as the press caught on early that the surprise had already been spoiled and his comments didn’t necessarily downplay attempt any damage control. At this point, DC may feel that it wouldn’t be a huge deal to jokingly tease that Superman is in the new film.
It’s still crucial to remember that even though hardcore fans may always be actively looking for spoilers, not every audience member follows superhero movie marketing or any sort of leaks, with the desire to go into the film knowing as little as possible. Even if hinting or flat-out spoiling the surprise can be exciting to some people, the more cautious audience may get frustrated to have something as huge as Cavill appearing as Superman be spoiled before they see it for themselves. With Black Adam now out in theaters, time will tell when Cavill’s Superman will next re-emerge in the DCEU, especially after the big post-credits scene with Johnson’s titular character.
