While Jurassic World introduced the Indomnius Rex, and Fallen Kingdom brought the Indoraptor, there will be no more hybrids in Dominion.
The controversy over the appearance of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World’s dinosaurs is something that has been debated since the introduction of the franchise with 1993’s Steven Spielberg blockbuster. While the original Jurassic Park movies saw dinosaurs “being engineered to look like people expect them to,” Jurassic World went one step further, with the park’s new owners now creating their own hybrid dinosaurs, including the fearsome Indominus Rex and the Indoraptor. However, for Jurassic World: Dominion, director Colin Trevorrow has explained why the story of hybrid dinosaurs is over.
The Jurassic World franchise opened up a whole new playground of dangerous creatures as the genetic engineering team, led by Jurassic Park’s Henry Wu, played by original star B.D. Wong, went about mixing the DNA of different species of prehistoric beasts to create some spectacular but deadly hybrids. As Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came to a close, the latest of these creations, the Indoraptor, had been defeated and the regular dinosaurs had been released into the world. In Jurassic World: Dominion, Colin Trevorrow felt it was time to forget about hybrid dinosaurs as they didn’t fit the narrative. He told SFX Magazine:
“The idea of hybrids had narratively run its course after the second film. It didn’t fit into the reality of the environment we threw our characters in. It’s so devoted to the real science that their number one priority would be to make the most paleontological correct dinosaurs as possible. They would not consider making hybrids there. They would look down upon it. I actually like being able to give the characters in the films different perspectives and points of view about dinosaurs and how they should be treated in this new reality. The ones in this film, the good guys and the bad guys, one thing they do agree on is that dinosaurs are real, and they should be recreating them as accurately as they can.”
Jurassic World: Dominion Finally Makes a Jurassic Earth a Reality
Throughout the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises, the one thing that has always been a hanging question is what a world with dinosaurs would be like. While Steven Spielberg gave a small glimpse of this with his King Kong-esque ending to The Lost World, which saw a T-Rex causing havoc in San Diego as it hunted out its kidnapped child, Dominion will be the first movie in the franchise to put humans and dinosaurs together on the planet and see what transpires.
We have already been given a sample of how life has changed in the years since Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, with the short film The Battle at Big Rock arriving in 2019 as a teaser for the movie, and of course, the trailers showing dinosaurs in the streets and running amok in drive-thru theaters. For many, this is the film that they have wanted to see for decades, and as Jurassic World finally lives up to the promise of the title, bringing back the original franchise stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, means that the gang is all here for one epic summer blockbuster.
