Anna Faris reveals how working on the upcoming comedy film The Estate helped reignite her love for acting. At the time of writing, Faris is probably best known for her work opposite Allison Janney in the sitcom Mom. However, she has been a stalwart comedy star since the beginning of the millennium, when she starred in her breakout role as the character Cindy in 2000’s Scary Movie, which she reprised in three of the film’s four sequels. Since then, she has gone on to appear in film and television projects including Friends, Brokeback Mountain, Keanu, and the 2018 remake of Overboard.

After her role in Overboard, Faris took a step back from working in films until The Estate, which is set to premiere in limited theaters on November 4. The Estate sees Faris starring opposite Toni Collette as a pair of sisters vying to be included in the will of their terminally ill aunt, played by Kathleen Turner. The film, which was helmed by Death at a Funeral director Dean Craig, also stars David Duchovny, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Ron Livingston.

Screen Rant had the opportunity to sit down with Faris to discuss The Estate and how it was first film she took after Overboard. She reveals that it was both her first post-quarantine job and her first acting work since the end of Mom, and it reminded her of how much she loved performing. She shares that while working with the film’s dynamic cast, “I was just absorbing these hysterical people that are also just so experienced. It was rejuvenating for me.” Read her full quote below:

Well, [I took it because] I was offered a job. [Laughs] But it had Toni Collette! It was in this spot in New Orleans, and it was hysterical. It really reminded me how much [I loved it], because I hadn’t done anything since Mom ended. It was my first post-quarantine job. I wasn’t sure what my relationship was with performing in general. I didn’t know what to think about the future for the first time in my life, really.

Doing this particular project, playing this character, getting to act with Toni and David [Duchovny] and Kathleen [Turner] and Rosemarie [DeWitt] and Ron [Livingston]. In scenes, I would just watch them and feel like I would forget my line all the time because I was just absorbing these hysterical people that are also just so experienced. It was rejuvenating for me.

Why The World of Comedy Needs Anna Faris

Fans of Faris will certainly be gratified to hear that the actor has found her passion once more. She is an important thread in the fabric of modern comedy, both for her well-regarded comic talents and her ability to effortlessly transition between big-budget, blockbuster comedy and more low-key, independent films. She has the capacity to excel in films like Scary Movie, The House Bunny, and What’s Your Number?, then immediately turn around to provide sweetness to more tart indies like I Give It a Year or Lost in Translation. That’s an ability that will likely be a huge boon to the comedy cinema community as they try to find where they fit into a pandemic-era culture in which theatrical success is less than guaranteed.

The Estate certainly sees her in the independent mode, playing a character who is more of a disaffected slacker than her normal type. Hopefully, her rejuvenation will see her continuing to explore characters both outside her comfort zone and within the skillset that has brought joy to so many people over the years. Should her step back into the film industry go well, she can hopefully harness her notoriety from starring in Mom and hosting the podcast Anna Faris Is Unqualified into a continued run of solid comedy classics.
